E Check Question

Question for those of you who bought smarts and are in an E-Check area in Ohio. Do we have to take a brand new smart to E-Check before getting plates and registration?

It seems crazy that any smart would have to go through E Check.

Nope. Exempt for at least two years, to original owner.

I thought a new car was exempt for a year.

Anyone who has had one through the process, are there special instructions we should give them before they run it up on the system? I had to advise them of the all-wheel drive when I first got my Rav4 in 1997. If they had put it on the rollers and accelerated, I believe it would have run right out of the stall. They modified the test by running it up to a specified RPM and holding it there. (Later tests may have been done differently as they started seeing more AWD and 4WDs.)

I suspect we would need to tell them it's rear-wheel drive. Heck, everyone thinks it's electric, maybe we should just pull in with an electrical cord hanging out from under the fuel cap.
