TAX!!!

I called my local Smart Center due to the fact that they had some Smarts for sale! The Smart Center is in the same state as me just 3 hours away. So I ask the peice of the Smarts for sale, and they told me that I would have to pay the taxes for that area! Does anyone know what this is? Why more they charge me more in taxes if I'm in the same state? Thanks for all your help! Brookville,Ohio

Ohio sales tax varies by county - you can check the county tax rates on the state of Ohio website. I believe you pay the tax at purchase but I'm not sure. If it's higher than your county's tax you'll get a refund when you register the car back home. If it's lower, you'll owe the additional amount.

In California you pay the tax for the county where you live, so if you buy in a high tax county and you live in a lower tax county you get the break.

Suggest you call your closest vehicle registrar's office and ask them about the tax difference and how it will be handled. Looks like your local tax is 7% and it's 7.75% in Cleveland.

If you buy the car in Ohio then you only pay the tax rate for the county you live in, don't let them try to tell you any different.

I am sure they will be honest with you,in some states you pay the tax rate of where you buy the car. The same as if you bought a coat at the Mall you pay the tax rate where the transaction occured. As stated by others it varies some you pay the tax based on where you live but a dealer cannot lie about taxes he would lose his license!

It is illegal for them to charge more than the actual tax. They will not chance it for a few bucks
