No, they should not have reset the service indicator since the schedule 10K service was not performed! The $74 was inline with most dealership providing a synthetic oil change, and yes, while it'll cost about half that much to do it in your driveway, not everyone is inclined to do so. But I am surprised that the dealership didn't suggest for you to wait a few hundred miles to do the complete 10K service (although if you thought $74 was bad.....)

I read her message that she went in for the 10K oil change which made me think they did the full 10K service. If its < 1K miles away they should have at least offered to do it. Heck, the Ford dealer keeps trying to do all kinds of extra service on my Explorer and early. If they did the full service (which is what I assumed) they should have reset it.

I think it's rediculous what dealerships are charging for the 10K service. I've read elsewhere here anywhere from $175-$200 for the 10K service. The service interval booklet that comes with your car tells you what to check, I did my entire service in about an hour in my garage. The only thing I didn't change was the cabin air filter. It's activated charcoal, which is affected by time not mileage. Once a year should be plenty for that filter. I pulled mine and looked at it, seemed to still be nice and clean.

i don't think the charge for the 10K service is all that out of line. unless you value your own time at $0.00/hr.
with the avg mercedes shop rate at probably $75/hr and up, it seems consistent with what i would expect.
after the labor rate, it would seem the most expensive element is the oil itself, premium-priced synthetic.

I'd say $74 is decent though $11 per quart seems a little too much. Some dealerships charge the full hour for an oil change.

I am a DIY-er myself. Thing is not everyone else feels comfortable changing their own oil. For $74, you let someone do the dirty work and they will be liable if anything happens.

I think I'll give it a try... maybe they will do it. It sort of seemed like they don't normally do that stuff from what the garage guy was saying...
Not too sure they won't charge additional arms and legs to do the overall checks...

The only time they wouldn't reset it is when you have your oil changed by time and were only 1/2 way through the count down... meaning you should get the oil changed at the mileage interval or once a year at a minium.

It takes < 20 minutes to change the oil in the driveway.

Do you get your car @ the omaha dealership?
Is that where you had the oil changed?

You can reset the service light yourself.
Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia

The only things on the 10,000 mile service are an oil change, a/c filter change and then checking the car over. They charge an exhorbitant amount to lat your brakes and check to see if you blinkers are working.

I paid $74 to have that done... I had thought that it was a service thing that they took care of the first time. (My last new car had free oil changes for the first year, so I assumed the same would happen this time.) Boy, howdy, was I wrong!
The oil itself totalled $41 or nearly $11 per quart! When I got to thinking about it though, when you only change the oil every 10,000 miles, it sort of makes up for the exorbinant sounding total, as you don't have to repeatedly go to the shop and have the oil changed every 3 to 5 thousand miles. After thinking about that for nearly the whole day, I also realized the price in relationship to the previous thought was darn cheap.
Anyhow, I just wanted to give y'all a heads up on the price so we wouldn't have to either scrape you off the ceiling, nor off of the ground. (LOL)
So, remember your checkbook!!
MB
I got quoted $300 for the first service...
