In 1999, when the first Smart mcc (micro compact car) was posted on eBay by us, the Smart car and eBay started a strange relationship.
Back then the non-compliant Smart's were first offered on the most successful online auction site to buyers, and in most cases, were taken down by eBay. This went on for several years.
Finally, in December 2004 the first not quite “modified Smart” was submitted by Zap for auction on eBay.
That auction, however, too was also removed by eBay.
According to a Zap spokesperson, “Due to the high profile of this auction they (eBay) would like to see the Americanization of the car completed before allowing it to be sold.”
It was not until June of 2005 that the first fully U.S. compliant and Americanized Smart Cars were made available to the general public. It was a 2002 Smart Car ForTwo cabriolet Passion and it sold for a whopping $35,350.
Since then many things have changed. The Smart is now U.S. compliant and Americanized and you can frequently find them for sale on eBay. At one point 20 cars were offered for sale on EBay.
Although in many cases, eBay is not the best yardstick for determining fair market value, in the case of the Smart it just might be!
In our study, we found very few Smarts have sold on EBay.
In all fairness the Smart cars that are now for sale on EBay have come down in price a great deal and many of those offered are being sold by dealers who can also service the vehicle.
A 2005 Smart Passion Coupe painted custom Lamborghini purple sold for $19,600, a sliver Passion Coupe sold for $21,440 and a 2006 Smart Cabriolet F1 was being offered for a “Buy it now Price” $24,695.00.
All in all, the cost is not outrageous!
