We thought this news worthy…Mr. D. Meyer was kind enough to write an extremely informative editorial about a trip he and his wife recently embarked on in their Smart. He first contacted Smart Car of America back in December of 2004 and at long last is the proud owner of a Smart car . Thanks again for your time. After taking a near 2 month trip to Alaska this summer in our Civic (arranged before we got our Smart).
We sold it, deciding to put more miles on the Smart. We live in southern Minnesota where I90 & I35 cross.
We drove to Winnipeg to pick up 4 snow tires that had been shipped to
one of the Club Smart Car members for us - a little over 1000 miles
round trip.
It was new to the customs agents on both sides of the border and gave both a chance to joke about its size.
In mid-November it was time to try going a bit further with it,
1900 miles to Quincy, IL; Memphis/Germantown, TN; Little Rock, AR; and
Cedar Rapids, IA visiting friends and relatives.
Every place we stopped, literally, people came over to ask about it -
at gas stations, rest stops, restaurants, post office, grocery store
and more. I fill up a bit more often, when between 1/4 & 1/2, since
some years ago a highway patrolman giving me a ride to a station told
me "it runs just as well on the top half).
At least 6 or 7 times people in passing cars took pictures with
their camera phones. Once a car flew by me, a mile or so up the road
it was stopped on the shoulder, after going by it pulled out and
gradually pulled up behind - then around and then slowly passed again.
The passenger was taking pictures all the time and waved as they
continued on. There were lots of "thumbs up" from younger people, some
could be seen mouthing "cool" or similar.
One night at a motel we parked next to a Freightliner tractor. Early
the next morning as I was "packing" (our 2 so-called overnight bags)
another guest came over saying he had seen it the night before and
wanted to find out more about it. In our conversation he said he
wouldn't want to be hit by "that thing" in such a little car. I asked
him to point out something else in the parking lot he'd like to be in
when hit by a semi. I mentioned that might be the difference between
and open and closed casket funeral. And, that I may have a better
chance to be missed than he would.
I enjoy not taking any negatives seriously. I'm not out there selling Smarts
- I might be if I wasn't already retired; however, that might be an
enjoyable part time activity if Penske sets up any nearby dealerships.
Another evening we stopped to eat, coming out a trucker at the next door station came over.
We must have talked for nearly a half hour. I drove up the road to another station to fill up.
While there he pulled in and said "Do you mind?, I just have to take some pictures of it."
People frequently made comments about its size, being a half car,
etc. My reply - I went to a half price sale, next time I'm going to
look close at what that gets. I just wish the car had been about half
the price it was.
Frequent comments were (and are here) "we've seen them in Europe, didn't know there were available here", "where'd you get it ", "is it electric
", "where's the motor", "can you drive it on the highway", "how fast
does it go". On the trip I could just reply - we drove down from MN or
we've been in Memphis, etc.
I tell people with the short wheel base
it does have a more pronounced bounce on bad roads but we haven't
experienced that many that made it uncomfortable. Also, a strong side
wind requires more effort to steer due to the light front end - that
needs to be about 30+mph to be very noticeable.
