Penske/Smart USA made a decision to use non-traditional marketing tactics.

The dealers chose by Penske and Smart USA paid $350,000 plus, for the privilege to sell the Smart, and each dealer will get about 275 cars for 2008, if figures supplied are correct.

The reservations process was limited to private buyers, no dealers or company sales and the $99 reservation fee is not transferable, but is refundable.
