In its first year of production, 1998, only 20,000 were sold and cost US$7500 to US$8000 in Germany.

Since then the dollar has crashed and many things have changed. In 1999, DaimlerChrysler sold 80,000 units, even In that short time it developed a Smart car culture. This section  follows news regarding the Smart car from the earliest days through the present.
