A Smart Car wins the 3,000-mile Cannonball Run. Inspired by the Erwin G. “Cannonball” Baker and in defiance of the then introduced 55 mph US speed limit, rebellious journalist Brock Yates launched the “Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash”. The Cannonball Run was made into a comedy movie and released in 1981 staring Burt Reynolds.

Smart USA sold 2,559 Smart Fortwo's in July, in the United States. Approximately 13,958 have been sold so far in 2008. That equals about 2000 units per month. Sales estimates for 2008 from the first reports were to be of 20,000 units. Sales numbers have been increased to 24,000 to 27,500 units.

The decline in demand for the most profitable vehicles- SUVs and pickup trucks and with inflation slowing our consumption for gas and crude oil at record highs, US auto sales fell again last month. All U.S. manufacturers reported declines, as well as Japanese automakers reporting double-digit drops. As a group, the market share of GM, Ford and Chrysler fell to 43% in July.

In 2005 a Sydney, Australian company called KahDo had the idea to leases Smart cars very inexpensively, for around $42 a week, for drivers who would drive Smart cars wrapped in advertising. KahDo offers drivers a Smart car at a fraction of the typical cost. The cost of the vehicle is sponsored by advertising displayed on the body of the car. When KahDo launched their idea the company received 10,000 requests
for the first 100 Smart cars. Clearly, twho gets to drive a
KahDo vehicle could been a problem.

The instantly identifiable Smart fortwo is celebrating its 10th year on our roads. The history of the car begins in 1989 when the two partners Swatch and Mercedes-Benz established the Micro Compact Car AG, headquartered in Biel, Switzerland. On July 2, 1998, a new concept vehicle rolled off the assembly line. It was called the smart MCC, now called the the smart fortwo.
