eMotion Mobility's Smart Gliders

Their process began with semi-completed MCC Smart cars, known as gliders, which would be minus the internal-combustion engines. At this time the average price of regular gasoline was $1.68 a gallon.

EMotion Mobility introduced its prototype all-electric Smart car in 2002. The company had planned to import 2,500 Smart car glider models the first year and had Daimler Chrysler's blessings; they only imported 30 Smart units. And none of their cars ever got to the market place.

Each Smart EV was to come with a cell phone, a GPS system and a touch-screen computer and back-up battery packs, for longer errands. An Internet Web site was planned to allow users to reserve smart cars any time of the day. Just like what Flex Car and Zip Car are doing now.

None of their cars ever got to the market place. This group had tons of cash, brainpower and collaboration. How could they fail and why?

EMotion Mobility must have planned to stick around, since one of the first things it did was contribute $5,000 to Mark Taylor's campaign for lieutenant governor of Georgia. However, in January of 2004 eMotion Mobility LLC, DaimlerChrysler Corp and the state of Georgia closed down operations and moved on to greener pastures.

Axis Group, Inc. of Decatur, Georgia the shipper of the smart cars did not get paid and had to placed liens on the cars to re-group some of their money. Axis Group (Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics) is believed to be playing a roll in the transportation needs for the 2008 importation of the Smart that will be for sale in the U.S. the first quarter of 2008. The inventory of the Smart car bodies and Solectria electronics was sold on eBay (see the EBay ad ).

Some of the Smart Cars sold were intact and had engines and have been converted and are being driven on U.S. streets.
