The new engines are more powerful: The three cylinder one liter engines come with 61hp, 71hp or 84 hp. The smart fortwo diesel cdi was increased to 45hp. All engines are linked to an automated manual five-speed transmission that has also been reengineered. They now have a maximum speed of 95 mph. Even with enhanced engine power, the standard consumption is less. The new Smart Fortwo cdi consumes even less fuel. 

The launch of the successor to the current smart fortwo in the USA, follows the success of the smart fortwo in Europe where more than 750,000 vehicles have been sold.
