Engine Replacement

I'm not a gear head. Loved my Smart Passion Cabriolet and when the check engine light came on I took it right away to my mechanic. He said I should go ahead and drive it, and the next day it was towed to his shop. Now, almost 5 months later, I am in need of a new engine. This is worth more than the cost of the car, so I'm looking at a used one. Does anyone know how much time should be involved with a mechanic removing the old engine and replacing the new? Are there any parts that have a secondary market value that I should hold on to or does it all go to the dump? The only problem it sustained was warped cylinders and I guess because of the way the engine block is made no one redoes those. I could use some info from anyone who knows.

Thanks,
George

Had a check engine light on, took it to my mechanic, he checked the code and said it was an evaporative emissions problem, said go ahead and drive it. It died when my wife took it to work next morning. Seems to have warped cylinders. Was told that because they are aluminum with sleeves they are nearly impossible to rebore/resleeve. What do I know about that though, like I said before I'm not a mechanic! New engine costs $12,500. I found a used one, but I'll have to get someone to drop it in and take the old one out. Thought I'd see how many hours I should be looking at for this.

George,

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Unless he is your uncle, based on the above I would first find ANOTHER mechanic who may be a Euro specialist and ask them the cost to R&R. A good Euro mechanic may also be able to source a used engine for you.

A new replacement engine at $12,500 would be of no interest to me as you will never get your money out of that "investment." eBay or junk yards have engines available in the range of $2-3,000.

Best of luck and do keep us in the loop as to your progress.

If you have to source a new engine, below is a national search site for used auto parts. There are several smart engines in the $2500-3000 range.

I was about to suggest the same that you trade for a newer Smart, and besides the 2013 model is far better.

An engine swap was done at Eurowise in Charlotte. I believe the cost was in the $800 range. Dealer wanted triple that. If you can't find anyone to do it more reasonably in your area, might be worth renting a flatbed or dolly-tow and bringing her down after you have an engine shipped directly to Eurowise. A lot of factors to consider though. It's an excellent shop. They've straightened out stuff for me that the dealer couldn't find and their pricing is very reasonable.
