Smart Car Resale Value

When considering the purchase of a 2009 Smart Fortwo, it's important to consider the eventual resale value. Keep in mind that resale value is dependent on many things, including the condition of your Smart car. Also, the optional equipment and, importantly, the car‘s mileage will also play a role in resale value. Resale value also is influenced by optional equipment and, importantly, the car‘s mileage.

Resale values are hard to ascertain for the Smart brand, since the car is so new to the market. But if we compare the prices from Europe, we can get a fair idea of what is to come.

The Toyota city car -- the 2007 Aygo -- was Britain's slowest- depreciating car in 2008. The 2007 Smart Fortwo Coupe came in forth, fourth for 2008.

The good news for us, but not for the leasing companies is that the falling values of used cars tell us that it’s the smaller city vehicles that will be performing strongest in the used-car market.

As a result of the automotive downturn, many buyers are trading down to smaller, more economical cars, increasing demand and pushing up prices for smaller cars.

In Europe, as it hopefully will be here, small is good when it comes to resale values, and the Smart Fortwo had 56.7 percent returns its original new price.

For those trying to sell their Smart, getting financing is making the sale of any car a task, and this goes for the Smart, as well.

So when considering the purchase of a 2009 Smart Fortwo, it's important to keep in mind what the eventual resale value will be.

You'll need to take into account that resale value is dependent on many issues, and optional equipment can play a large role.

Buying a Smart Pure model may be the cheapest way to drive a Smart, but it comes without air conditioning and you'll find selling it might not be as easy as you had hoped. Any car without AC will have a depressed resale value.

Unfortunately, any aftermarket extras you put on your Smart are for your appreciation, and in most cases, will not increase the value. In some cases, it might even decrease the car’s value, so don't expect to get that money back.

eBay, once the gathering place to buy and sell Smart cars, is a good indicator of the resale market.

If you go to www.ebay.com, you'll see the number of Smarts for sale has increased notably while prices have dropped significantly. But when gas goes to $4 a gallon, and it will, we expect that will change.

Cars have almost always been depreciating assets and most any car you drive off a dealer’s lot will lose $2,000 to $8,000 immediately!

If you plan to sell your Smart, as far as trade-in values go, most dealers will not offer you much, so we recommend you try to sell your Smart car privately.

Putting your Smart in a visible place with signs may do the trick!

Please remember, if you purchased your Smart feeling it would go up in value, or as an investment, you were mistaken. The end result for many was that all the hype over a period of many years created a sense that buying a Smart was an inspired financial move.

With the customary market pricing setting in, we need to remember it's still just a car. But it's still one of the best cars you can purchase for the price.

We bought our Smart because we've wanted one for many years, had a need for it and a love for driving it.
