Micra with a Diesel? In India right now

The Rs 5.6-lakh Nissan Micra diesel is here! Check it out

The Rs 5.6-lakh Nissan Micra diesel is here! Check it out - Rediff.com Business

If you've picked the latter, let us introduce you to 'drum rolls' the new and polished Nissan Motor India Pvt Ltd's Micra diesel - the Micra's diesel sibling.
It will be launched on December 10 in India.
The Micra diesel variant will be available in two trims -- the Micra XV Diesel and the Micra XV Premium Diesel -- and it will be offered in six colours -- Sunlight Orange, Blade Silver, Storm White, Pacific Blue, Onyx Black and Brick Red.
We drove the Nissan Micra XV Premium Diesel before the launch and here is what we found...
For starters, let us tell you that the pictures just don't do justice to the car.
The Nissan Micra has cleaner curves and lines and oozes a lot more attitude on road than it the does on the posters and hoardings.
With an overall length of 3780mm and overall width of 1665mm the car easily tackles traffic, small roads, gullies and anything city driving may spring on you.

-----------------
So...will the diesel in the unnamed forfour, base on the Micra, have a diesel option?

It would be great if it did for two reasons: 1) we'd have some type of lower cost diesel option vs. the $25K and up VWs, MBs, and BMWs; 2) smartUSA could get a look at what kind of demand there might be for a low cost diesel and translate that into a US compliant next gen fortwo/forfour that's being designed now.

Although that would be the best scenario, I'm going to have to agree with lebikerboy.

fortwo's, forfours, and especially anything slower won't have increased demand until gas reaches 4.00 a gallon again. People have to have a reason to give up something to make the change. Wallet ache at the gas pump will do it. Wallet ache will also overcome diesel objections of smelly fuel at the pump, noisy operation, and slow acceleration until those features are designed out of the engines.
An inexpensive "Zero Shift" type of transmission will go a long way towards increasing popularity of the smart. Elimination of the "herky jerky" pause will go a long way towards helping change the fickle american public's attitude towards our cute little car along with a good dose of education regarding it's safety frame. IMHO

Since this most likely will only be a two year model, I doubt they will spend the extra to make it happen

Only if Nissan brings in the diesel. smartUSA won't pony up the dough to make it happen. Besides, a diesel forfour would get better mileage than a fortwo, we can't have that.....

Besides, the article refers to the diesel being made in India. Shoot, over there, they could spew radioactive waste out the exhaust and they won't care.....

Not sure that stereotype is supported by the facts. India is trying to get a handle on the air pollution situation:

India revises air quality standards after 15 years IANS, Nov 18, 2009, 06.21pm IST

Quote:
NEW DELHI: With pollution level rising across the country, India on Wednesday revised the national ambient air quality standards after 15 years.

"We have notified the ambient air quality standards in India which is equivalent to the European level and exceeds the standard prevalent in the US," Minister of state for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh said.

The revised ambient air quality standards provide a legal framework for the control of air pollution and the protection of public health and any citizen can approach the court demanding better air quality.

OK, but modifying the standard and enforcing it are two different things......
