Jim/MB DNA, here are the two pages of the document I was provided as part of my purchase paperwork. I covered up the VVC (don't even know if that matters but I know my VIN is out there and having these two is necessary to register so I thought I'd at least keep this secret!).

As has been said, the dealers are pretty unaware of this and I have been too lazy to run it up the corporate tree. However, if it can possibly help get this re-established for however long, I'd be willing to take this on if the consensus is that it would be worth it.

WOW, you have a 2-page advisement that would provide you with little to no recourse??? While I have seen the same verbiage in various forms, never a date certain (5/26/2020) expiration date for the FREE homepage trial?

By virtue of it being a FREE trial, not sure what "damages" you might pursue? With the demise of 2G I can promise you that Daimler/M-B/smartUSA will not be plugging it back in . . .

Which us why I have not pursued this. I seriously doubt one person with a smart is going to cause MBUSA to turn back on infrastructure that was decommissioned months ago.

In any event, I hope the paperwork is at least informative or entertaining.

When I bought my car I was told it worked and that my car had just been serviced..Booth not true... I bought my EV (ED) in September 2017 with 17000 miles on it. I thought I could turn on my air conditioner for my dog wile I was in a store shopping. I think that is what sold me on the car.

I wish we could buy a new modem for the car or just use our cell phoned to check and clear the codes.

Note: at my age I don;t think I want ED on the side of my car. Just saying..

**No one** that I have run into has looked at that sticker on the side and thought it was anything other than an electrical plug and some sort of representation of an electrical socket. I don't think it closely enough resembles alphabetic characters for people to interpret it that way.

That being said, for those that have a smart in a blue color. . .

I'm kind of surprised that some techie hasn't written a third party app for the smart. I suppose there just aren't enough of us...

Essentially that wouldn’t be possible because the car has to connect to smart servers, and then the vehicle homepage connects to that. Without the servers, the vehicle homepage is useless.

Why does it have to go through MB? Why can't I control my heater and electric seats from my smart phone. Why doe MB need to know that I turned on my heater or that I have lost my car in the parking lot?

The original system used a cellular modem to communicate out to the Internet.

MB's involvement was two-fold:
  1. Paying for the SIM card access to the [2G] cell network
  2. Running the server to which the car communicated.

To replace that functionality with a non-MB service would require purchasing a SIM card and provisioning service to another cell network (easy for T-mobile's 2G network, maybe possible for another carrier's more modern network) and changing the code or configuration inside the car to connect to your internet server of choice over the cell network (not easy).

I am beginning communication with a guy from Germany that is part of a small group that has been developing a ODBII module for the SMART electrics:

My German isn't very good, but the Google translator works well enough to read up on what they are doing. If I can begin a dialog with Erich, I will post updates here.
