Tesla Roadster battery packs degrade over time, and the projected life cycle of a pack is targeted for 10 years assuming normal use and regular charging and maintenance.

When regular charging is missing during storage, extended maintenance, abuse or neglect, the pack can reach internal voltages that essentially make the pack go to sleep and attempts at charging through the charge port no longer work. This has condition has been coined as a "Bricked Battery Pack".

This condition is often reversible but requires skilled personnel and a process we have perfected. As low as $1,295.

BACKSTORY - appears that Mr. Gruber has "been providing power protection solutions since 1984!"

Following this May 2017 debacle I am surprised that he can find fire insurance to house that many EV's under one roof without a specialized fire retardant systems???

All,

Well, I've given up ... and have sent our little Smart 451 to our local public radio station as a donation. I hope some MB tech finds it & resets its error codes, and gets it back on the road. I did a final scan just before the car was loaded up, and as you can see, even after sitting for a month and a half without being charged, the HV batter still retains about a 60% SOC. I think that this shows that these batteries can recover from a slow "safe discharge" controlled by the car's BMS system. Here's the data:

I did contact MB customer support with a parting shot, and they gave lip service to willingness to address this problem:

Technical Support

Response By Email (Debra A.) (08/20/2019 10:48 AM)

Dear Jon Renner,

Appreciate your patience while this was being reviewed.

Without the opportunity to physically inspect the vehicle, it would not be possible to determine the cause or steps to resolve the below-listed concerns. The Service Manager at your local authorized dealer would be in the best position to make the necessary recommendation in this regard. All service records are kept at the dealership where the work is performed.

MBUSA relies on our dealer network to diagnose and rectify any vehicle performance issues. In addition to specialized tools and training, authorized Mercedes-Benz/Smart technicians have access to a highly technical support team which includes MBUSA engineers.

We have reached out to the Service Manager at Mercedes Benz of Medord to address your concerns regarding vehicle recommendations.

Our dealerships are in the position to address any present or recurring concerns and have the resources available from MBUSA for additional support. Further involvement from MBUSA would be at the discretion of the Service Manager.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond and for bringing this to our attention.

Kind Regards,

Debbie A.

Thanks to all who helped me investigate this failure ... and who might appreciate the green flames on the nose of our little car. How do you think I should answer Debbie?

Just got this from MB:

Dear Mr. Renner,

Appreciate your additional contact and feedback which has been documented here at smart USA.

STAR Tek Info is an official Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC site for hosting service and repair technical documentation for both Smart and Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The repair process section is called WIS (Workshop Information System), which is the same system our dealerships use. We invite you to visit the website at www.startekinfo.com. We feel this website would benefit customers who work on their own vehicles. There is a charge for daily, weekly, monthly or yearly access; however this is the best information you will find for your car.

All technical support is through the dealership as they have the tools and diagnostic equipment available.

Kind Regards,

Debbie A.

Hi Jon,

Sorry about your car I too have given up and just parting out. Just like you lip service from MB the only lesson here is never buy an MB product again. Companies need to learn that you cannot just screw ppl and get away with it.

I still think there is some flag that gets tripped and all we need to do is reset it but like you I am tired and it's time to move on.

In my area the local electric co is offering 5k on the Nissan leaf and you still get the 7.5k so 12.5k is a good way to start if you are in the market for a new car.

Oh and my plan worked as noted my wife always a MB girl whole life but now driving a Tesla (due to my Smart issue). Her one friend (who was just coming off lease with her MB) seeing and driving in my wifes Tesla actually ordered a Tesla and she takes delivery today!!! Her other friend last night seen the Tesla (another MB fan) and fell in love and her lease ends in 3 months. So already MB has lost 2 long time customers because of how they mistreated me and it will only continue.

To MB if you read this forum I really love your official slogan “The best or nothing” you decided to give me nothing, and I decided to give you nothing, for the rest of my life.

MB I hope it was worth it... all I know is the Tesla is so so much more car than the E350 ever was, so in a way Thank you for steering me to a better car company.

Bruce,

Not that I can imagine that it would have tripped, but did you check for continuity across the pyro fuse? It is located under the carpet under the driver's seat.

And while we are throwing darts at this elusive problem, an interesting white paper on E-Vehicle Safety - Pyro Switch as High Voltage Circuit Breaker & Bypass.
