My 120v charger is very slow (EQ 2019)

Good morning

I just bought a new Smart EQ 2019, but I previously owned a Smart ED 2013. The 2013 fully charged in about 12h with the provided 120v charger, but the 2019 is taking over 20 hours. Is this normal?
How can the newer model be less efficient with pretty much the same battery?

From what I am seeing, the charger is only 10a and 1.2kW. The car says 9a 1kW when plugged in, which is probably pretty much accurate.

Did they cheap out on the 120v charger?

The 451 ED equipment operated at 8A or 12A @120v. But they were also prone to failure, so they may have reduced the ampacity to avoid problems.

You could pickup a 120V / 240V portable charger rated at a higher capacity. However the odds are that your garage circuit is only rated for 12A continuous.

I was not aware that they were prone to failure. Charged my car without issues since 2013. I never installed a level 2 charger because 12h was enough to fully (or almost) charge it before my commute in the morning, which is only 20km anyway so never needed a full charge.

I have ordered a Level 2 charger and will get it installed later this week. I mostly wanted to know if I had a cheap or broken Level 1 with the car. A couple of stats I saw were contradicting. Also, the packages in the United States are different from the ones in Canada and the Canadian site has not been updated in a while, and probably never will.

Thanks for your answers everyone!

The Level 1 charger on the 2013-2017 (451 and some early 453) electric smarts was rated for a higher max Amperage than the level 1 charger that was provided with the 2018-2019 smart EV/EQs.

If I recall correctly, the old EVSE was rated up to 15A/120V so 17.6 battery/1800= ~10 hours (+ time for resistance so actually about 12-13 hours), vs the newer one is 10A/110V so 17.6 battery/1100= ~16 hours. (+ time for resistance, etc so actually closer to 19-20 hours). Not exact figures but close to those.

Exactly, you can also see all three variants there are here:
- The cable of the ED3 was capable of 8 and 12A.
- At the start of production of the ED4 there was a 12A cable, later they replaced it with one wich was only capable of 10A.

Was the cable, provided from mid 2017 to early 2018 unlocked to 16A in America? In Europ it hat the LED to show that it could, but it is software locked to a maximum of 12A.

@Eric Chantigny you've got the 10A cable they now ship since 2018.
