Think about the GM switch and relate it to our own engine failures, shifters that give 3 bars and fail, crazing glazing that's never fixed and other recurring issues over and over Daimler-Benz never does anything about except on a "case by case" issue.....never a proper, voluntary recall.
I just read the article you quoted. That is exactly the kind of shoddy research, horse crap article I would expect you to quote.

Obviously this is not a life threatening situation...but the defective roof on our cars could have been addressed as a courtesy or a significant discount offered by MB for the dedicated owners and enthusiasts which we are.
Yes, I realize I have greater chance winning the lottery before this would ever happen.

The Pano Roof on the early smarts is the only thing that makes sense to issue a recall on. Other than that what for? My 2 smarts have been perfect.

Actually after having my car get the three bars of death twice in the last three months in the middle of driving my car down the road, Smart Card and Mercedes needs to do a software fix or have a recall on all cars that are programmed to stop working when certain faults happen. I asked my dealer advisor today if the issue with my Smart (the motor in the transmission) was so dire that my car needed to shut down in the middle of the road (since she thinks it's the same issue that happened in Oct). The obvious answer was no.

And from researching other forums and discussions, it seems like there are a handful of codes/faults that will cause the Smart to revert to the three bars of death and immediately shut the car down.

For example, weak battery connection. Does that seem so bad and so dire that a car needs to do the nuclear option and immediately shut off?

What seems more reasonable is some kind of warning light that tells the driver/owner, "You have an issue, get to dealer ASAP."

Most of my driving there is no shoulder and the speed limit is at high speeds. Getting the three bars of death, could actually cause my death.

We had a recall in Canada regarding the smart 450 door locks which were
prone to opening when they weren't supposed to and not locking when
they were supposed too...
All 10,000 plus cars sold in Canada were recalled for this. I personally have
never had the problem as I judiciously apply Wurth HHS 2000 as a regular
maintenance item. Still have the recall notice handy though just in case...

1.Naturally with no shift motor the car WILL NOT be able to drive
2. Bad battery connection..car will stop..simply put it's all electronically controlled (as are most cars now-a-days)
3. umm Check engine light??

Horse beaten ....

Silent warranties, secret warranties, technical service bulletins. When I had a new 1999 Miata the word got out that some crankshafts had been mis-machined and would destroy the engine, due to excessive end play. The dealers knew about it, but would only check to see if your engine was a time bomb if you came in and insisted that they inspect your car.

From the day of the sale until the day the warranty runs out, the dealers and the manufacturers are not your friends!
