Just south of there is the soaring capital of the world
(spent 2 summers hanging out in Horseheads and Elmira) Just avoid the Mark twain Motor in where the water in the pool is as muddy as the Mississippi river.
That makes a lot of sense, I knew that prices in the area would be driven up, but I didn't take the sheer crowds into consideration. Also true is that we would have to decide between the races or personal track time. I'd vote for track time.
I would strongly prefer getting on the track and some relaxation time versus a weekend of fighting crowds. Maybe the race weekend is out; the gathering will be more about us than a certain event.
Would anyone be up for a weekend camping trip versus hotels, or would real beds be preferred to the ground? It could be a Who-Can-Fit-The-Most-Camping-Material-In-Their-Smart weekend trip.
Drive to Watkins Glen and arrive on a Friday.
Explore the area and then gather for track time and meet&greet on a Saturday.
Do breakfast (maybe takeover a restaurant) and drive back on a Sunday.
This gives us 2 nights in a camp / hotel. I think it's a nice, cheap 3-day weekend, and it also doesn't interfere with 2 separate workweeks, so we can all go back to work on Monday!
Whadayathink? Suggestions? Opinions?
The one thing I don't know about. Should it happen this year or should it be 2013? It kind of looks like 2012 is already full of events.
