Idea for a NorthEast Meetup at Watkins Glen

I've been a long time racing fan, so naturally I'm attracted to my home state's own Watkins Glen International raceway. I got to hunting around for stuff to do with out Smarts up here in New England / NY / PA / CT / etc, and one thing really stood out to me.

What if we did a track meet at Watkins Glen? The 'Glen area also has a lot of camping possibilities to make a weekend out of it - some relaxing one day, a big 3-lap Watkins Glen run another day, and I'm sure we can find a number of things to do. At $25 a car, a 3-lap run around a famous road course seems like a heck of a unique experience at a great price!

(More info on that from The Glen website, here.)

I'll look around for places to stay in the immediate area - we could either camp or stay in hotels. It looks like there's a lot planned for 2012, so maybe this could be a 2013 event?

I'm excited at the thought of this.

Would you (or anyone else reading) be interested in joining up? I'd love to make this a full-blown event next Summer. I really want to see a Smart event take over beautiful upstate NY.

Even better idea! I'd have to see how much they drive the area prices up when NASCAR comes in. The prices might turn some people off, but I'd be game!

The Glen area turns into a tourist madhouse when the race comes in. I'll also have to see when they schedule the track tours around the main race events.

That's a good one; I can always count on you and your suggestions. Thanks!

If you do it in conjunction with a race weekend you will be driving 70 miles to find a hotel.

And you will never get on the track. It is a beautiful area around the finger lakes, Lots to do that isn't directly car related so you can get the other 1/2 to show up as well.

And if you do it on a non race weekend, the hotels will be plentiful and a lot cheaper.

Just south of there is the soaring capital of the world

(spent 2 summers hanging out in Horseheads and Elmira) Just avoid the Mark twain Motor in where the water in the pool is as muddy as the Mississippi river.

That makes a lot of sense, I knew that prices in the area would be driven up, but I didn't take the sheer crowds into consideration. Also true is that we would have to decide between the races or personal track time. I'd vote for track time.

I would strongly prefer getting on the track and some relaxation time versus a weekend of fighting crowds. Maybe the race weekend is out; the gathering will be more about us than a certain event.

Would anyone be up for a weekend camping trip versus hotels, or would real beds be preferred to the ground? It could be a Who-Can-Fit-The-Most-Camping-Material-In-Their-Smart weekend trip.

My idea:
Drive to Watkins Glen and arrive on a Friday.
Explore the area and then gather for track time and meet&greet on a Saturday.
Do breakfast (maybe takeover a restaurant) and drive back on a Sunday.

This gives us 2 nights in a camp / hotel. I think it's a nice, cheap 3-day weekend, and it also doesn't interfere with 2 separate workweeks, so we can all go back to work on Monday!

Whadayathink? Suggestions? Opinions?

The one thing I don't know about. Should it happen this year or should it be 2013? It kind of looks like 2012 is already full of events.

There are quite a few people who regularly tow their cars behind campers, and some who have trailers for camping equipment. My days of camping are long gone I'm afraid.
