453 Official Flat-Tow Instructions

Good news everyone, we received official approval and instructions for 453 flat-towing. From an official bulletin today:

"We are excited to confirm the approval of MY2016 and MY2017 smart fortwo flat-towing capabilities. Model Year 2016 and 2017 smart fortwo ICE coupes and cabrios equipped with the twinamic Dual-Clutch Automatic Transmission may be flat-towed behind other vehicles such as Recreational Vehicles, moving trucks, etc. This approval applies to all Model Year 2016 and 2017 smart fortwo ICE coupes and cabrios with the DCT transmission, regardless of production date. Updates to the owner’s manuals are in development.

DISCLAIMER: MY2016 and MY2017 smart fortwo models with the standard 5-speed manual transmission and smart electric coupes and cabrios are not approved for flat-towing."

Hey Keith,

This is great- thank you.

The instructions say "Contact an authorized smart center for information on recommended tow
bar equipment and installing a matching on/off switch on the battery terminal".

Where can smart dealers/brand managers find this information to provide our customers? Will there be a Netstar bulletin?

I have never known of a manual transmission being not approved to tow? No pumps needed to lubricate a manual transmission for sure. I would like to see if anyone has had any issues towing the 5-speed manual as I sure plan on towing mine.

If you flat tow and tear up the transmission it will not be covered by the warranty.

Thanks for the welcome! Testing on my part has been done so no worries. The transmission in neutral is disconnected from the drive wheels and free wheels as every manual shift I have ever seen does. The second confirmation is after testing flat down and monitoring for 125 miles....No heat build up or any damage. The manual transmission is lot safer in towing......as with any other car.....than a automatic.

Very interesting and disturbing. French engineering at it's 3rd world best...LOL. I guess my differential change to Royal Purple synthetics saved the day! Looks like I will be getting one off those cute little trailers for long hauls behind the Motorhome.

Thanks much for the input.
