Gas Tank Fueling Problem on new 2016 smart

I just picked up my 2016 smart last week. I tried to fill it up twice at two different gas stations. Both times the pump kicked out way too early. I knew by the amount of fuel pumped that my tank wasn't at capacity and sure enough, when I started the car, I was still 1/4 tank shy of a full tank (2 bars were missing for a full indicator). I tried in vain to top it off but the pump wouldn't let me. The dealership service dept blames the gas station pumps but I have my doubts. I will try a 3rd gas station tonight on my way home that is a different company from the 1st and 2nd. I looked on line and there are many issues on different types of vehicles regarding this same issue. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANY SMART OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM ON THE NEW 2016 MODEL.

Well, my 2015 451 is very temperamental to fill. I have to fill it slowly and feather the pump to get it to top off.

No problems so far on filling my 2016 453. Bars go to the top. FYI - This has no bearing on your specific problem but the 451 tank had a max capacity including reserve of 8.6 gals. The new 2016 453 tank has a max capacity of 7.6 gals so each bar now represents a bit less than one gallon. Your into the reserve when tank is down to 1.3 gallons. MIKE700.

I picked up my 2016 453 Thursday November 19, and have filled it up twice and yes I had problems both times so I am going to try parking with the nose pointed slightly up instead of down and pump the gas very slowly. By the way the 453 owners manual says the fuel tank's total capacity is 8.7 gallons.

I am afraid Mike is right... It is a gallon smaller in our 2016 car.

Years ago, someone (not SCoA active since) physically removed his 451 tank and measured the total capacity, with reserve, at 10 gallons. IIRC, he posted a video or photos of the operation. I can't cite the post ... maybe someone else (jwight?) could.

But, I know it's over 8.6 or I would've run out of gas on multiple occasions ... hasn't happened yet. Plus, if it were 8.6 including the reserve the fractional bars (0.9, 0.8, 0.7 ...) should start after consuming somewhere around 7.6 gallons. That doesn't happen either.

I've run the tank to 0.0 bars numerous times and a few of those times managed to pump 8.5 to 8.7 gallons. I believe there is a reserve of a little over a gallon beyond 0.0 bars. I will NOT determine this experimentally. But, I'm glad it's there protecting my fuel pump when I run the gauge lower than I should.

But back on topic: At some pumps I have to ease up on the pumping speed quite a bit as I near full to avoid an early cut off on my 451.

Yes, confirmed a good bit ago at 10 gal for the 451!

With our closed systems now a lot of cars are sensitive to fill volumes.
