F-35 is a touchy subject in these parts, has been for a few years. The media had their fingers in it and twisted the true story out of proportion making it look like locals were anti-military. The base started their inaugural class around 3 weeks ago. Their training everyone from pilots to MX.

I have yet to notice any flying but then again I rarely pay attention to fighters. Thanks for the share.

Touchy subject up here as well. As costs keep escalating, Canada
may have to select an alternate...

Full disclosure: former Boeing engineer on the F-22 program. Red team member for F-35.

IMO we had the better design, but Lockheed had the "look" the AF liked.

I'll always believe the contract award was a combination of beauty contest and political determination. Boeing's design wasn't as conventionally aesthetically pleasing and Lockheed had "spread the wealth" for development and production among many more congressional districts.

This video shows the merits of a Marine variant. It's a worthy replacement for the Harrier. But is it really needed? I contend that any VSTOL aircraft is an unnecessarily expensive/complex answer to a question that has been pre-empted by the realities of current war-planning/war-fighting strategies/planning.

We have better fighters. We have better attack aircraft. We have adequate VSTOL aircraft.

Let's face it. F-35's "One size fits all" approach was a worthy goal but the end result is far off target.

Regards,

Dan

At $300 million apiece, I think it deserves to be the center of controversy.

That ship, USS Wasp is coming to New Orleans as part of Navy Week here this week. And on Tuesday I (as part of the media) get to be flown out to it by helicopter and sail into port. Guess I can then cross that off my bucket list :-)...
Don't think any of the planes will be there though.. but lots of helicopters :-)

Can you tell I am excited :-) :-)
