Oil-Chem and SMI will offer a refund of up to $1 million, in the aggregate, to certain purchasers of zMAX, who bought zMAX before January 31, 2001. No refund will be offered to purchasers after that date

So what changed after 2001?

So the "resolution" states in part the following;

Oil-Chem and SMI have not admitted any liability in this litigation. However, in order to avoid the significant expense and time involved in the litigation, the FTC, Oil-Chem and SMI have agreed to end the litigation by the signing of an order, which, in summary, states: (a) Oil-Chem and SMI do not admit any liability and continue to deny any liability; (b) The FTC has issued its compliance letter (which confirms that enforcement is not merited for the eight specified claims); (c) Oil-Chem and SMI will not make advertising claims which are not properly substantiated; and (d) Oil-Chem and SMI will offer a refund of up to $1 million, in the aggregate, to certain purchasers of zMAX, who bought zMAX before January 31, 2001. No refund will be offered to purchasers after that date.

Now, what would a reasonable person conclude from all this? Litigation was ended to avoid considerable time and expense. An agreement was made that Oil-Chem and SMI would refund purchasers of the product who bought it before the original lawsuit was filed by the FTC. And, Oil Chem and SMI will no longer make advertising claims that are not properly substiantiated. Of course, it was only after the lawsuit that they undertook their 4.5 milion dollar venture to substantiate their claims.
The following is a summary of the test results - http://www.zmax.com/documents/testing_summary.pdf

These are biased tests of course since they were funded by the producers and marketers of the product to satisfy the demand of the FTC that they "substiantate" their claims. Are there tests that were conducted to disprove their claims?

You may choose to believe their claims or remain skeptical. You may also believe the statements of manufacturers and lubrication specialists who say not to add any additional products to engine oil.
The simple fact of the matter is that no modern engine requires anything more than the approved engine oils that are recommended. Anything else is basically just something to make an "enthusiast" feel better, and they are marketed to that effect.
If it doesn't do any harm -(if you trust that claim) - then use it if you want.

You got that right. You change the chemistry of the oil. Most additives are petroleum-based and will shorten the drain interval of the oil by adding them. They may improve conventional oil, but by adding that expense, you're better off going with a good synthetic oil instead.

More info on additives. Save your money.

At least with Mobil 1 you can go up to 10,000 to 15,000 miles with their extended oil or better yet, with Amsoil you can go up to 25,000 to 35,000 miles when using one of the Amsoil oil filters.

Please stop the hating. Marketing of a product has zero bearing on how well it will perform.
