Smart Battery and key desync

I am a new Smart owner, and bought a used Smart Passion 2006 diesel. I love my smartie, but last week it wouldn't start, and when turned to the "1" position the instrument cluster would show on the dash, the fan would hardly work, and there was a ticking noise ... The key symbol would show frequently indicating that the car and key were immobilized, but I know how to fix that. Long story short it wouldn't start, and turning it to "1" showed a number of different things, and I live in a very cold climate. Eventually the key had no effect on the car whatsoever. I got it towed to the dealership and the battery had to thaw since the car hadn't started in 5 days and was outside in -20 celsius. Once the battery thawed the dealership told me it wouldn't charge and a new battery was needed and hopefully that will be the only fix needed. Two questions!:

1. Does this problem sound like only the battery to you all? I thought perhaps the key became desynchronized with the car?

2. The dealership is charging my 265 canadian dollars to replace the battery, is that a normal price for a smart car battery?

Thank you smart people!

Since your car is a 450, I've moved your thread there for better exposure...

I'm not sure if the price the dealer is charging is good or not. Huronlad or Mike_T might. For that kind of money I would recommend getting the Optima Red Top 34/78 R from Canadian Tire or similar. Its a much better battery.
