Anyone able to help a Brit!

Hi all

So my first purchase has been a rollercoaster!

Bought 2009 Smart MHD (I know, lesson learnt, do not under any circ's buy MHD!!!) with 53k miles on it and in decent condition bodywise and good service history.

Initially the EML light was not on, collected car couple days later & literally drove half mile & it went into neutral and would not go back into gear. EML came on as well as 2 spanners appearing, one of which was flashing. Had to wait few minutes then it would restart & go back into gear but got pretty rough near home. Kangarooing, delay in engaging gears and the exo light was flashing.

Done some googling, as you do, and called around a few people. Long story short, fella came & read/reset codes as the ECU has a habit of throwing hissy fits on them. Drove fine for few days & then I thought I would take for a longer 1 hour drive to test it today.

Unfortunately it went back into neutral again and the spanners came on but no EML light.

A Smart specialist said the software needs an update but they looked & it turns out that has been done so didn't charge, which was nice of them.

Managed to drive it home and it was OK for a fair bit but then started to delay in changing gear and was clunky and jumpy when it did. When I got back it was just the EML light on, no spanners.

So there are a multitude of things it may or may not be, can I ask for some thoughts on what it could be if anyone has heard of or encountered similar?

It seems to run OK from cold for a bit but then when you get to speed it starts and that's it it carries on.

At the moment

Thanks

Paul

PS: These were the fault codes found originally, just a few!!!

Welcome to SCoA! Not sure what EML is and we didn't get the mhd version in North America so that may be an issue.

It would have helped it the smart specialist had scanned for current codes....

Anyway, could be something simple like the clutch actuator needing adjusting or something much more complex like shift motors or even the clutch itself. Some of those early codes relate to the O2 sensor or fouled plugs, but no guarantee those are the culprits.

Thanks jwight. Sorry EML stands for Engine Management Light here.

Also have just had it scanned & only one fault code:

P0141 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

I'm not that mechanically minded, could that have caused the issues I have had?

Thanks

Paul

Sorry to repeat but not sure if you saw the following as I edited my post before.

P0141 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

I'm not that mechanically minded, could that have caused the issues I have had do you think @jwight ?

Based on my limited knowledge, I don't think an O2 sensor problem would cause transmission issues. Not sure if you are in touch with other UK owners, or have looked at the Evilution.co.uk site, but those are two other resources for you.
