Maybe I am just grumpy, and I'll keep it. But... bringing it up to $8k once fixed, seems odd, because if I continue to use it and in 3-5 years, it has 200k km's on it, it won't be worth $8k.

Also, I could buy a smart pure at $2k as I've been online looking for an engine.

Sadly the resale value on a smart is dismal at best. Most cars are a losing proposition as they get older and don't usually increase in value until years later when they become classic cars.Once you drive them off the new car lot, they start losing value. The market was flooded with Car2go vehicles and that drove the price down considerably. A replacement motor is probably your best bet and the cost is not cheap. These cars are not for everyone and for most families, they don't work, or if you need to handle a load of stuff, they don't work. They are truly a specialty car. If it fits your needs, they are a great car! I loved each one of mine , and would own then again. But I do have other cars available if I need passenger space, or need to move a load. On my 3rd smart...

I really do love my little car. It is PERFECT for my lifestyle. I like to explore, and to adventure, and although I cannot off road in it, though I've never done that before. I have also just dreamt for years about a little short box truck.

I just have been trying to decide which way I should go. Currently, the two part time jobs I work, if I don't give full open availability to one, well, I often sleep over night on the staff couch just to work the 4am shift in a grocery store, cuz that is the best job I could get right now. The city transit ends at 2am, and doesn't start until about 5am.. It sure would be nice to have a vehicle again to have a healthier nights sleep, and not have to spend on car2go to get to jobs. I just worked a triple back to back. Plus, I could potentially get a a full time 40 hours/week day job with a vehicle, cuz those are the walls I keep running into.

If I had the use of this car right now, I'd move cities, and buy a roof top tent, and live in a camp site just for work.

I love to take pictures, though never had education in it, and no real camera to speak of, and this car is my best little bud making my photography life more possible.

I am now at a place where I am working as much as I can to pay this mechanic to rebuild the engine and I hope he can, but he's not given me a quote. He just keeps telling me he is not going to charge me, but I am not like that, I work hard for things. I am also smack in the middle of an application for a program - of which I will likely move to that city just to have a better chance, and I pray I have a car....lol

These cars can actually do some decent offroading given some good tyres. I took my mostly stock 2012 on an offroad rally last year. It went mudding, had a couple water crossings, and I even got it down a rock wall! So long as your offroading doesn't need an insane ground clearance (rock crawling) or 4x4 (deep mud, deep snow, etc), it's a little beast!

Of course, I wouldn't recommend doing any hard offroading often as you'll basically wear everything out quickly.

As for your engine, honestly you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The car's value will not appreciate much (if at all) after the engine swap. Yes, the new engine will have lower miles, however even low mile 2009s are only worth about what you originally paid for the car. So spending money on the engine is a massive gamble and the market isn't in your favour.

My advice? The path of least resistance. Do whatever is the cheapest way to get yourself some working wheels.

Was going to park the car out at my dad's, as I just got it back, made it to two shifts with it, know I shouldn't be driving it, some other weird sounds coming from it when the brakes are applied, but figured maaaybe I would drive it until it quite or something ( cuz it's freaking turning on!?!?!), as I was JUST deciding this today, the mercedes foreman mechanic texts me to say he's found an engine for $850. I don't know how many kilometers. or what kind of shape it is in, but yea, I'm buyin' it.

!!!JUST FREAKIN ECSTATIC!!!

Also, a new ft job - ish... dependent on weather. Supposed to be 45 hours/week.

Wish me Luck!

Hi, the engine was a dud. I sold my lil smart yesterday for $2350. Asked $2550. They know it is a running but a non drive car, and that they'll likely need to rebuild the engine - a mechanic bought it.

I also landed a bar job for part time, which I am also ecstatic about. Back to 60+ hours a week, and right in time for Stampede here. They are really nice people, which is rare in my industry.

I'm uncertain if I will buy another smart, because I don't want to pay extra fee's when things go wrong, and I am sure there are many on here that have owned smarts without issue's for years, but it was my first car, and it was unfortunate to have all the issue's it did in less than a year. I cried when someone else drove it away. lol.

I had to withdraw out of the program I was in, but gearing up for a two year Welding program next fall - which I am excited for.

Everyone up North say I should stick to my dream truck, but I still grin and say a smart could make it... in the next 2 weeks, I will have enough to buy another smart...or hold off to buy my truck. With a truck, tacoma, dodge, or ranger, I can learn how to do basic fixes on my own, which was my goal in buying a vehicle.

....cuz I have my eye on this cherry red passion convertible with cruise control, and the whole nine yards.... but I just have to be practical.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I'd you but a truck you'll pay for gas instead of mechanics.
AMD toy will also pay for mechanics. Try dropping the transmission on a truck. It's big and heavy, so now you either shell out for a shop or you get a nice jack, jack stands, tranny Jack... it just adds up no matter what car it is.
What toy should've done is invest 5 American pesos in a bluetooth obd2 dongle and monitor the temp on your phone.
What toy really should but is a old air cold bug. Those are pretty simple to work on. And white reliable too

Honestly, if you were to go for another smart I would say get a 2010 or newer. 2010s and newer will have the fewest problems and the greatest chance at getting you around without your bank account taking a sledgehammer. First cars shouldn't be project cars and shouldn't leave you stranded.

If you go the truck route, I highly recommend the Ford Ranger. I just picked up a 2000 Ranger with the 4.0 V6 and 4x4 for $800. Fuel economy is pretty impressive thus far even though its misfiring on a cylinder. If power isn't that much of a concern, get the 2.3 or 2.5 inline 4. The 4 cylinder trucks are gutless, but those little engines are bulletproof, get decent fuel economy even by today's standards, and when paired with the manual transmission, will far outlive the body, frame, and maybe even you.

If you go the Ranger route, DO NOT get the 3.0 V6. The Vulcan engines can be a handful and expensive when they aren't well cared for, so stick to the 4 cylinder or either of the V6 engines.

My Ranger just took over mudding duties from my 451 smart. I'm glad for that, I sent the truck so hard that I tore off the lower front bumper!
