I don't believe in "lifetime" lubricants in anything. Bottom line, use what you wish but change it out more frequently than manufacturer's specs. I have seen "lifetime" auto tranny fluid after 70K miles. It should have been changed out sooner! Personally, I wouldn't go more than 60 K miles. I change out my Dino engine oil every 3,300K miles and auto tranny fluid every 30K miles in my older cars. Wouldn't go more than 5K miles on synthetic. Just my personal opinion after a lifetime of auto ownership and self-service. BTW, when is the last time you have seen a premature engine or tranny failure, not caused by a defect, because of using some variation of the correct type of lubricant? Next to never, i'll bet!

you are in the real. my friend after 10 years work at the smart center have tell me that exactly about the 451 oil gearbox "DON'T PLAY WITH THAT, DO IT YOURSELF BUT BUY THE OIL TO A SMART CENTER" now he is come back to mercedes and he doesn't have any interest in this oil business. the oil remplacement on 451 is easy ! why want to safe $ on 2 liters ?
think to the bmw steptronic owner, the remplacement of gearbox oil is preconize all 80 000 kms (theyre are sell for lifetime !!) and need the bmw dealer machine (under pressure) for changing, the cost is 700 euros.
lifetime oil isn't the truth
we are very lucky with our 451

Just an update to my post a few months ago. Redline MT-90 fluid still going strong. 10k miles on the gear oil and no unusual noises, strange shifting, or leaks coming from the trans. I expect to put another 20k on the fluid until next change @ 60k. At that point I'll see if there's junk when draining out the fluid, though my intuition tells me that the Redline gear will be A-OK as w/ the trans.

Just a quick update. I filled up Mobil 1 75W90 about a year ago. 6k miles later, the transmission felt "weird". Shifting wasn't as quick/smooth.

Found this thread and did a Redline MT-90 swap.

All good to go now.

On a happy note....According to US Federal Law 15USC50 2302(c) if they brand a specific oil for this goofy transmission, the must provide it to you for the life of the product "without charge". Look at section (c) on:
United States Code: Title 15,2302. Rules governing contents of warranties | LII / Legal Information Institute

Simply hand the service writer his own copy of this LAW and have him or the parts manager deduct the dispicable charge from your bill...in the USA.

This is why GM doesn't ever tell you you must only use oil from GM or BP in your warrantied GM SuperPooper 5000. As the company has specified a branded product must be used, the solution is simple.....

No telling who or where that stuff came from. Amsoil is only a bottling plant you can see on Google Street View in Superior, WI. Oil comes from oil companies with refineries you can't hide, not bottling plants by a railroad track.
