Used parts

Thought about this when I replaced the front end on my car... I noticed the back side of the front fenders have a label attached with the serial number of the car on them. Since my original ones were damaged beyond use and I replaced them with used ones off another car, the numbers will not match my VIN. I doubt that anyone will care, but just made me wonder a bit...

Guess I will keep the receipt for the parts with the title just in case

IMO, I'd say to not even give that a second thought!
These cars were originally marketed with the thoughts of being able to change colors (i.e. panels) on a whim.
The chassis is the only place the VIN matters from a legal aspect.

Only matters if someone reports them stolen and you have a state salvage inspection. So no worries......

The VIN decals on the body panels are there to comply with the Fed's parts marking requirement in the Federal Theft Prevention Standard, Title 49 Part 541. The parts that need to be marked are listed in 541.5 (eCFR ? Code of Federal Regulations).

exactly why I mentioned it. I figure if I keep the receipt of where I got the parts from, if it ever comes up, I should be protected.

This can come in handy when a pre-owned vehicle shows a clean Carfax - mismatched VIN on hood and front fenders caused CarMax to refund a Lexus sold as having never been in an accident according to the Carfax report.

You sir, are too kind. I like the Girl Scout ones, but only if the Girl Scouts are sliced real thin...

I doubt if my mishap would show up as there was no insurance claim made.

The only reason those numbers are on each panel. It's to match it to the right vehicle at the assembly plant. Every modern new car on the road today has those numbers, bar codes etc. The only real vin number that matters. Is the one on the header cowl. Everyday body shops all over, use salvage body parts with different serial numbers. When repairing vehicles. Not a big deal.
