Radio/nav system issue

The radio in my 2013 Brabus began spontaneously shutting down (I think it was rebooting) a few days ago. It worked intermittently until today and now tries to boot, shows the Smart intro screen, then goes dark, repeats the reboot sequence three times then shuts down.

Who has had similar experience? What was the fix? I have an abiding concern that the fix is to replace the entire unit. Does anyone have a clue what the cost from the MB service group would be for this? A quick check online suggests that the discounted cost for a replacement assembly exceeds $500.00. I further am convinced that MB doesn't/won't discount the cost of the unit and wonder how many hours the replacement requires at $114.00 an hour.

Any thoughts/guidance will be gratefully appreciated.

Went to dinner and the #$%^&ing radio and nav system worked, came out of restaurant and it worked again. This is NEVER going to get fixed because it will NEVER replicate at the dealership

The radio is not a dealer field-serviceable unit. If the power and ground to the unit are good the only option they will give you is to replace it.

Or you may find a used one from a place LKQ that us a large network of used car parts. I've used them before and they are top notch.

LKQCorp > Inventory Search

It may be cheaper to just buy an aftermarket radio from ebay or amazon. I'm looking for a good deal on a radio with NAV, DVD and bluetooth myself. If you go aftermarket stay away from the Pyle brand as there have been alot of problems with a few of their NAV radios. I have a dead one on my workbench right now. DCO

Just as a heads up I would not buy one from another country. I have found it impossible to update the maps in mine, and research tells me that up to now the latest map data is from 2012/2013:

bosch-activation.com

It MAY BE difficult to get the maps.

Considering this, it may not be worth it to replace with the same unit, but installation wise it should be very easy as compared to aftermarket. No need to mess with the wiring. My screen started failing and it was replaced under warranty at around 3 years. Not exactly looking forward to paying for a replacement in about another 2.

Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market is where I'd go for used. LKQ lists there as well. LKQ is definitely one of the largest, if not the largest recycler around.

As Rustedwrench notes if you verify good power and ground wiring replace the unit with another one. Sometimes people post them for sale here...

I can probably find the replacement instructions if needed. Hardest part is first step, carefully prying the button bank just below.

Some Nav radio units have a tiny pinhole on them somewhere with the word reset by the hole. You can push a paper clip in the hole and depress a button for maybe 5 seconds. That resets the radio and it will reboot and hopefully work again. My aftermarket Atoto MK4 android radio I put in Max instantly comes on when I press the power button because it is always in standby mode. But occasionally it will freeze and I have to push the reset button to allow it to reboot and all is fine. I don't know if the factory NAV radio in our Smarts has this reset feature button or not. If there isn't a reset button, pulling a battery terminal for a few seconds will achieve the same thing. DCO
