Convertible Wind Noise

I have been a Smart car owner since 2008 when I purchased the convertible. Great car! I liked it so much I decided to get the 2014 Smart Electric Convertible. I took possession in June. I loved the ride, acceleration and road feel but hate the wind noise. With the top closed there is a very noticeable wind noise, reminiscent of the old rad top convertibles of the 60s. When I took mine back to the dealer to have it fixed I as told that there was nothing wrong I could hear it because there is no motor noise in the electric. I still had my 2008 so was able to compare both with the motor running in neutral and with the motor off. No wind noise with the 2008! The dealer doesn't know how to fix so its been referred to the factory. Still waiting for the factory rep to show up in Seattle. Anyone else with the same problem.

My '14 cabrio, and the other cabrios I've been in, all have wind noise at road speeds above about 45 MPH or so. With the ED, there is no engine/transmission noise (which is significant as speed increases) so I would imagine that you hear more of the other ambient sounds like wind noise. The cabrio doesn't use an insulated top (it only has the outer layer and the headliner; no padding/insulation/noise damper in-between), and it's shaped like a hatchback, so you get to hear the air swirling around at the back of the car and overhead.

The wind noise is obvious at 20 mph. You missed the point of my email, my 2008 convertible does not have wind noise at any speed with engine on or off. If the 2014 top is built differently that is a major defect.

I also have a 2008 cabrio AND a 2014 ED cabrio.

Any significant wind noise in either vehicle I would attribute to a misaligned top closure.

The ED is under warranty, take it back to the dealer as many times as needed to get it fixed or replaced?

Also, call smartusa and make your issue known to the mothership.

My 2008 developed a problem some time back.

Often, when I close the roof, it doesn't completely close properly. I've even observed it go to the close position and then back off enough to allow the viewing of daylight. Usually though, it just doesn't seat properly, which results in objectionable wind noise.

I can back off and close it again. Sometimes it takes a couple attempts to get it closed correctly.

Just throwing this out there. I seriously doubt this would be the OP's problem in a new car.
