I took my 2015 smart in for an oil change and they showed me what they said was an oil leak. They cleaned off all the black stuff and said they would put a dye in to see where the leak is coming from. When I brought it back they said the transmission fluid is leaking from the rear axle assembly. So which is it?! It's hard being a chick because you get taken advantage of! Please help me understand what's wrong with my car. Thank you!
I got the pics, looks like the transmission.
I would suggest, cleaning the underside real well, then top off the transmission fluid, and drive it for a while and monitor the amount of leakage, and exactly where its leaking from. Could be something as a loose bolt that needs another tightening. That may be wishful thinking, but it is a possibility.
Having done this, you should be able to learn what you need to do... replace a gasket, or overhaul the tranny.
How has the car been shifting? Any check engine lights? The good thing, these cars are fairly easy to work on, and if transmission work is required... it should not be to pricey!
Keep us informed, and the pics are spot on.
From the description, it looks like one of your rear axle seals are leaking & will have to be replaced. Not a big job, but this should be taken care of. A good independent shop should be able to do this for you.
2015 may still make the 4 year warranty cut. Check with MB fast. I had my leaking axles changed under warranty on my 2014 just before warranty expired. Doesn't sound like you are being taken to this point, A leak was discovered, its source was pinpointed. So far so good. Check on warranty repair option.
If anyone can chime in with "out of warranty" expected cost of Axle replace/repair to give her a range to look for it would be helpful.
Photos appear to load on the mobile version of the site, but not on desktop. I've seen this reported as a possible bug on other vBulletin boards. I'll look into it as much as I can.
I can see the photos. They point to the transmission. I think dhlairbusb4 has you on the right track.
