Smart Rally At The Glen 5
July 15th - July 17th
Please follow the Smart Rally At The Glen group on Facebook!
BUYING TICKETS - MANDATORY:
We will have a new process for ordering tickets - you must have a ticket to the Wine Festival to participate
, even if you are only doing the track laps. There are Designated Driver tickets available for those who do not wish to stay or will be driving home, and they are the cheapest available - they are discounted further because we will be getting them in advance.
Pricing will be announced closer to the event in early 2016.
Via PayPal, I will take all early purchases, and buy all tickets in bulk before the event, locking in the price. Friday, for those who will be around, and Saturday morning for everyone else, I will hand out your tickets. I'll be keeping a spreadsheet with everyone's basic information to keep things organized.
SATURDAY MORNING MEETING:
We're going meet at Walmart in Watkins Glen, NY on Saturday morning (July 16th
) at 7:30am. We'll hang out for a little bit, and if anyone wants to go into town (or to Walmart) for food and meet back up in the parking lot (8:00am), that'll be fine too. By 8:30am
, we'll be leaving Walmart to go to the track.
Here's the map from Walmart to Watkins Glen Raceway, via Google Maps.
We can meet in Watkins Glen, New York (the town) right on the lake, less than 15 minutes from the Watkins Glen International racetrack. The Walmart will have a big enough parking lot so that we don't crowd some business unexpectedly.
So, meet at Walmart in Watkins Glen, and then drive over to the track for our laps!
AT THE TRACK:
The laps will be at 9:00am on Saturday. (Just like each year.)
We will need to arrive at 8:45, and go through Gate 2.
Through the gate, we'll take a right, and go behind the grand stand to line up.
There is a crossover gate where you cross the race track.
We will sign waivers that say if we wreck it's on us.
There is absolutely NO PASSING and NO SPEEDING. (The 'Glen is nice enough to give us the opportunity to do this each year. Don't land on the banned list, or screw up a good thing for everyone else.)
We do our laps around the track, escorted by Pace Car!
Finally, we will be led to our parking place - to be determined, details to follow.
Saturday will be a free-for-all to enjoy the Wine Festival, go back in to town, do whatever you want, and chill.
SATURDAY EVENING SMART COOKOUT:
This year I want to do something more special than walking around the 'Glen scouting for Smarts. There is a large pavilion in Watkins Glen State Park that they will rent out for events or special occasions.
I would like to know if there is any interest in getting a small pool of funds together to rent that pavilion and pay for supplies like burgers, dogs, salads, plates, drinks and other goodies. For anyone that is able or would like to, please keep it in mind. I will have a dedicated thread for this at a later date.
This will be taking the spot of the Sunday Breakfast at Savard's Restaurant, as it closed shortly after changing hands last year. If anyone has an idea for a Sunday meetup, I'm certainly open to suggestions!
For anyone in to camping (I know I am) you can book a campsite for tents and trailers, or even one of a select few rustic cabins at the New York State Parks Website
. For a great price, I highly recommend it as the park is fantastic, the hike through the gorge is absolutely amazing, and you can't beat the location, which is right up the hill in the center of Watkins Glen.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE:
I wanted to share a huge thanks to everyone that has come to my humble little event, and has grown it in to the party it has become each year we're there. The track knows us well and welcomes us back each year - and I wouldn't be surprised if we made some of the marketing material for this year since a photographer was snapping us on the track for 2015.
It's a pleasure organizing this all in my spare time (what little of it I have these days) and my reward is seeing people come out and have a good time doing something we normally wouldn't get to do otherwise.
As others have done, another plan (if the interest is there) are event decals - I've been asked about that quite a few times. I would love to get a printing place to do up 5 different designs to cover each year we've visited, so stay tuned on that. I'm thinking a simple outline of the track, the year, and various colors to mark each occasion.
Year 5... It'll be here before we know it. So planning begins - a year in advance!
