Storm Chasing with a Smart Fortwo

Hey everyone, has anyone here done any storm chasing with their smart?

I've been a storm spotter for a few years now and have chased my share of storms. I plan on chasing with my smart this summer, and wondering if anyone has tips. What is the smarts performance on dirt roads?

I'll be chasing in MN/IA/WI

If your storms are anything like what we've had in Arkansas of late, you need to carry some quick set ground screws to tie down to. You're a small target, but very light with a large side profile. Watch out, you may be the first to drive a smart in OZ.

Not a storm chaser (more of a hide in the basement type) but I'd want something with a little more zip just in case outrunning one of those things was required.

I've got a washboard road - the county does a horrible job maintaining it (I'll have the person in road dept's job soon if he doesn't shape up). I can tell you, on the washboard road it is a bone jarring experience.

On a smooth dirt road, it's just plain fun. Yesterday my father and I were going to a car show 40 miles away and the road there had a tractor trailer turned over in between 2 guardrails blocking traffic. We decided to go off the beaten path as I have GPS we knew we were headed in the right direction. The dirt roads we encountered were all different types - almost 20 miles worth! I was surprised it went fine through the sandy road too, almost a beach sand - it did bog down a little. After 1800 miles, after yesterday I have around 100 miles total of dirt logged on the car. If it is a bumpy dirt road, good luck - I normally go about 5mph on that one and it is still horrible. Makes me want to punch that guy at the road dept.....

I'd also be weary of the oil filter hanging down... it's fine for on-road (although the prospect of running over a "gator" (truck retread) and tearing it off scares me). I'd think that off-road it might not be a good idea.

After interstate driving in 45 mph cross winds I'd not want much more than that. Car was not out of contriol but you sure feel it over a BIG sedan I drive most times!!
