What Would You Do? (dealer service?)

I have a 2012 Pure and have taken it to the dealer for all the maintenance. BUT here is the thing, I now have 44,001 miles on the car, and 36,500 on the engine, My engine was replaced at 7,500 miles when I bought the car (long story). So now the dealer wants to do a 50,000 mile check and I am no where near that in mileage.

Would you 1.) Let them do the 50,000 and pay for all the extra stuff they do, 2.) Ask to have a lower mileage service done again, 3.) Wait to 50,000 since I did replace oil and filters at 35,500? Or 4) Have them do all the stuff they do except for the oil and filters sooner than the 50,000 and what all should they do?

Are there any places cheaper than dealer and Smart Madness to have this done in SoCal? Thanks

Any good auto service shop can do what you need done. If the oil and filter were done at 35.5 K they are due again at 45.5K....

You can buy the oil and filter at Walmart and have a good shop do the oil change for you.

Yep. Outside of the 60k valve check, there really isn't anything the MB dealership does that a competent independent can't.

I am in the same boat. I picked up my 2014 Smart with around 25k and got the 30k service done with a rear axle under warranty change.
Since then I am no longer under warranty and have had all services done either by myself or local shop. Now I am at just over 40k.

What I intend to do.....

Get a full price for the 60k service with Flat belt replace. Whatever that quote is put that money aside and have that 60k service done any time after I reach the 50k mark. with 55k as the true target. Mean time continue to service my Smart with DIY and local shop servicing as long as the car performs as properly as it has been over the 15k miles I have driven it.

Agree that it’s easy to do routine services like oil change and air/cabin filter changes by DIY. The problem comes, at least for me, when you have to do things that require lowering of the engine. Does anyone have good instructions with pictures how to lower the engine for 451 (2008 year model)?

Here ya go!

Lowering The Engine - 451

It's locked behind a paywall, but Evilution is only like $12 USD a year and it's basically a shop manual for our cars. Well worth it!

A sensible tech would ensure the replacement engine was serviced and sweet at the point of installation. This being the case, carry on with the servicing regime as dictated by the age and mileage of the chassis.

I can highly recommend www.evilution.co.uk. It's run by a fellow Brit, and is an astonishing compendium of information for all generations of Smart, presented in a clear, well documented manner, with a pinch of English humour. Worth every single penny of the £10 annual subscription.
Smart Bob and Ety Bity like this.

If your capable. Just change the oil, oil filter, air cleaner yourself. Replace your cabin filter too.
Lots of video tutorials on YouTube. Demonstrating those basic maintenance procedures. I would just do the 30k manufacturers basic maintance.

If Your not mechanical incline. There are plenty of good automotive shops out there, that can service your car too.

Do you know any mechanic shops that work on Smart cars in Southern California other than dealers and Smart Madness?

Any independent Mercedes shop, will be able to do the work in SoCal. Just compare pricing to find the lowest cost of service...
