Whining sound at startup

On engine start after being shut down long enough to cool, there is a high-pitched whine that lasts for about 35 seconds, the frequency getting higher right before it stoops. Is this the vapor canister purge function or ???

The emissions system is running its air injection pump. This is normal for literally the first 35 seconds.

It is the secondary air injection pump, and it's completely normal.

The secondary air injection pump pumps extra air into the exhaust manifold after a cold start within a certain temperature range in order to reduce emissions during initial warm-up and also to help the catalyst light-up faster.

These pumps have been used for decades by many, if not all, manufacturers. I have a 1977 and a 1990 Benz and both have one. Previously they were belt driven and often not very noisy. The one on the smart is electric and obviously noisier.

AND, you are sitting on top of the air injection pump in a plastic car with very little sound insulation.

Add an aftermarket exhaust and you will never hear that pump again...

No. That is a metallic scraping sound and not normal to my ears.
