The Smarts electronics system is pretty picky. If it dips just a little bit because the battery is low it can even prevent the transmission from shifting. Definitely check out the battery.
Keep us informed. How long ago was it that you drove your smart before the dead battery/no power event happened? What steps did you take to get it running again? I think I remember your smart is a 2008, have you ever had your battery replaced?
We had our battery go dead. We couldn't even unlock the doors with the key fob. Hubby used the key to unlock the car then pulled the battery and charged it. I've now driven the car for 3 weeks without any further problems.
I'd try charging the battery as well as cleaning the battery terminals before going and buying a new battery.
