Factory Warranty Requirements / Basic Maintenance?

Hello,

We have a 2013 ForTwo Passion convertible with 19,700 trouble-free miles. We're the second owner and bought it with 8,000 miles.

Our question is: What are your experiences with authorized Smart Centers honoring or NOT honoring the powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranty if you have NOT had the 'recommended' services done?

Sure, we get the importance of running fresh Mobil 1, filters etc but the recommended A, B, C etc services seem a bit overkill in their scope and price for such a new car.

Also, are you getting your oil changes at the authorized Smart Center?

We're just trying to run our car economically while also not invalidating our warranty.

Federal law protects us from the manufacturer forcing us to use their facilities for service. All that is needed is for us to provide evidence of the important service being done - by ourselves or an independent.

To deny, they have to show evidence that the service was not performed, and that your poor care lead to the specific failure. You will need the service records if they make such a claim. They won't without reasonable evidence. The service center wants it to be covered. That's how they get paid after all.

Withe every new car I have owned I have done all of my own maintenance and have never had an issue receiving warranty service and I have had some major warranty service done. On my 2005 Ford F150 I had the drivetrain from the transmission to the rear wheels replaced, on my 2006 VW Jetta I had my outer door skins replaced and on my 2013 Nissan Sentra I had the whole engine replaced because of an out of round cylinder from the factory (maybe I should stop buying new cars, lol). Never once was I even questioned about maintenance. I know none of these vehicle were Smarts but these dealerships make money from the manufacturer for fixing your vehicle. It is not in their best interests to deny you warranty unless it is just blatantly obvious that you caused the damage from neglect or misuse.
