Dealerships Open?

After feeling abused about not getting my smart until Feb 1 I am now feeling pretty good considering how many dealerships are yet to open and how many of those that are unopened seem no have no clear idea when they will open.

I've been driving mine for 2 weeks and while I was a first day reservation and a first day configuration I am sad so many other 1173s still seem to be waiting with no clear indication of when they will be able to take delivery.

It's difficult to sum up how many cars have actually been delivered from the posts in the forum but it should be in the Hundreds and it doesn't seem to be there yet.

The question is this.....Do we really know how many dealers are actually open and delivering cars and how many are yet to open and does anyone have any idea about how many smarts have actually been deliverd into the hands of buyers at this point?

It would be interesting to know the answers to both questions.

I did not like Smart car dealer next to the Mercedes dealer like the one in Utah, I almost walk out from the dealer when I went to pick up my Smart car from that dealer, if I did not have my 5G deposit I may end up with Honda or Toyota.

When I walk in the show room they look at me like I am going to boarder or begging them for something until I start made some lound voice and the young saleman came over and apologized me. These Mercedez dealer are "SUCK" if you dot't dress up coat and tie they will not look at you at all different from the Lexus and othe luxury cars. I have own many of these MB before and still have one in my garage, I am regete to have one sat in my garage too, but I cannot effort to sell it. I wish they seperate Smart Car from the MB dealer, I may get one more.

This post was from a long time ago, most of these dealers were Penske Automotive Group dealers and no longer handle smart.

I wouldn't mind driving 100 miles for a dealer, but since we don't even have a dealer in Minnesota, and the closest dealer is in Madison WI, over 200+ miles away, There are some pretty unhappy owners around here.

I could easily have sold a dozen cars but not when they have to drive that far just to look at the newer models...

#11 ·
Is it just me, but is seems that SMART USA is falling down on the job? Or did Penski do so much damage to the name that new dealers aren't interested in the brand? I too could have sold quiet a few SMARTS but with the nearest dealer being one hundred fifty miles or more away, it's just too far for people to be comfortable with. I really don't understand why a major dealer isn't in the Fresno area, it's a large city.

#12 ·
From what I have seen and heard, smartMBUSA doesn't really care. They had a good dealer in Minnesota, not MB related but they pulled their equipment and left us high and dry without a service center. How would that make you feel if you had just bought a brand new car and to get a warranty item fixed, you would them be required to drive 200+ miles each way??

#14 ·
When I first got my 2008 smart, I was blown away by the exceptional service and response from the dealer with the problems I had with my car. They were the prime example of what a dealer should be like. Since MB took over, that has changed. what more can I say, Would I buy another? doubtful unless there was better local support. But that is my personal choice and not based on anything I have been told to do on the internet or any forum. I am one of those rare individuals that thinks for themselves after looking at all the facts.

#16 ·
There are currently 87 dealers in the USA, there will be an additional 5 or 6 coming soon within the next few months. The network will grow, hopefully smart USA will receive dealer applications from businessmen willing to take on a smart dealership in those areas that don't have many to choose from.

I know there are 4 serving the LA area.

#19 ·
LOL.....were you one of the suits at the Dells rally last June? That's the same hogwash the MB reps were spouting. "........MN will have a new dealer in weeks, not months, please be patient". Yep......7 months later still no dealer & no word of one ever coming. 200-300 mile drive (or tow) for warranty or service. Smart is not a viable brand at this point & should be avoided at all costs. Just because you have a dealer now doesn't mean you'll have one in the future. We've had several dealers here in MN & every one bailed.
Fortunately my 2011 pure has performed flawlessly for over 9K miles, but every time I start it I worry something might go wrong & I'm left high & dry. When I make my recommendations to those that ask I steer them toward one of the Asian brands, or the newer American made ones, or any brand that's somewhat stable.....which Smart isn't at this juncture. :smartje.grs.zw:

Kamaal, thanks for the info.

Do you know if the powers to be are talking to anyone in the Central Valley? Like I said before, it's hard to believe there. Is no dealers in the Fresno area, that is a pretty big city!

It is so easy to bring attention to the market, I get asked quite often... "where can I get one?". I tell them the nearest dealer is in Santa Barbara, the interest just goes away.

#18 ·
Time will tell. I really don't know the specifics of how smart recruits dealerships. I do know dealership ownership is a two way street though, somebody has to also be willing to take on a location and invest in smart's future.

I've attempted to market in the Central Valley, Kern County, little brother to Fresno, and I've been slammed by all the local alliances in that area. If there was somebody like you in Bakersfield raising a voice to local credit unions and dealerships and banks, perhaps I would be able to sell some cars there and suddenly the idea for a dealership would come up. Same applies to the Fresno area. If it's what you want, keep your voice heard.

I have to say I'm a little concerned about the Seattle dealership. I took my car there for annual service last month. There was ONE smart in the lot and none in the showroom. They no longer have service open the same hours and the showroom is now closed on Sundays. Someone just rearended me today. I tried to call to bring my car in. No one returns calls. Can't make an actual appointment for service, they just say to bring it in any time. What's going on there? It's like a ghost town.

#24 ·
But that doesn't explain the lack of people returning calls to schedule service? What is happening there? I haven't visited this forum in a while and didn't even know about the MB takeover till I checked today because of all the weirdness trying to get in touch with someone at the dealership. I saw that some dealerships weren't selling new smarts on one of the threads? Is that true of Seattle? Anyone know? I'm getting worried that I won't be able to get my car repaired. :-(

Debby it's almost over for Smart.

Our dealer, that was once the HQ for Smart is gone, and an MB dealer is offering service at outrageous prices and little or no sales.

The 2013's, due out before next month will be the last of the 451's.

The MB people show little or no interest in our cars as the whole Smart operation will once again switch to new management, this time by Renault.

This makes me so sad. I have really loved driving my smart car. This week, I have seen the most atrocious, negligent service from a dealer ever in my life. Still, to this minute, no one from the dealership has called me back from any of the voice mails I have left. The only person I have spoken with is the receptionist.

Thursday: rear-end car accident. Called several times, no return call. sent email to manager.
Friday: called and spoke to receptionist. email from manager with some very basic response about "sharing service with their Acura dealership", no specific response to any of my other questions about my vehicle. no returned calls from manager or service.
Saturday: sent another email to manager, still never responded to. Receptionist recommended I get my car towed there. Service is closed on Sunday and Monday.
Monday: Had car towed to dealership. No contact from anyone. Called and spoke to receptionist who said my car was there.
Tuesday: no contact from service. can only get voice mail. called smart HQ, who in turn called dealership where they are told service is closed today for special training.
Wednesday: no contact from service. called and get voice mail. called smart HQ. They contact dealer who says service is out "making deliveries" and offers to forward them to service. When HQ says that service isn't returning calls, receptionist offers to walk back to service to ask them about my car's status. Received no further communication.
I call and speak to receptionist several hours later who tells me that service says they don't have my car????!!!? I ask him to please check because it was towed there Monday. Call smart HQ again. Customer service there calls and gets in touch with dealer who now says they have found the car, and that it was left on a back lot they don't check????? but someone left the interior light on and the battery needs to be jumped now. And now I am told service is out for special training all week. This is absolutely insane. I have to go more than a week before I even know if my car is beyond repair or how long I will be without a car. I have never seen anything like this in my life.

Smart HQ tells me that Phil Smart Mercedes Benz in Seattle is going to be doing smart repairs... I don't know if this is good or bad based on responses I see on the forum.
