Each different enginge has to have extensive engine testing for emissions translate that as huge investment, which is why we only get the one engine, one model. Apparently it is thought that the for four will cover that expense with the four seater. If that engine is already used in another brand's car, that expense has already been done for the U.S. market, that is something I do not know. Parent company may cover that expense.

The old forfour uses a 4cyl MIVEC that's used in some Mitsubishis here.
The roady's 3cyl is practically the same as the ones that are in G&K 450s.
The crossblade's is exactly the same as the 450s.
Special models can be equipped with the US spec engine if needed.

That just leaves testing on the diesel, which is bound to cost less than redesigning a Nissan Micra and shipping it overseas.

LOL
I don't think those outdated used models are going to increase any sales in the US even if importing them was free!

Everybody thinks that it is only a test that keeps the diesel out of the US, sorry to burst your bubble. Its a whole redesign of the technology that is needed before it will pass into the US. There is just not enough car there to support the size that the current diesel technology allowed needs to fit into. Also the maintenance issues involved. Just take a look at what is needed by other vehicles that have diesel engines currently.

Read the comments of nearly every fortwo review or news on smart, people say they want the roadster and the four door (they don't know what it's called) imported here. Give the people what they want, import them.

Heck, even reviews of the fortwo say that smart should've brought imported roadsters and forfours along with the fortwo.

As far as the diesel engine goes, it shouldn't have to go far to meet emissions standards.

Dude, I've read the comments. Are they from people who don't know that those vehicles have not been built in years? Do you think somebody will try to import converted used cars to meet those desires and be able to profit? Or do you suggest that someone start rebuilding those models? Not easy. I don't think so. Maybe in the future. Penske's deal with Nissan a stopgap. Does Daimler approve?

smart diesel doen't have far to go to get certification for US? Where do you get that from? It will not happen without a lot of investment. So much in fact that it has been said over and over from smart, no diesel for US.

This just in: The new logo for their US-only Micra hack isn't smart. In fact, they've already started preparing us for the new US brand . . .

True, very true. They don't know that production stopped. But either way they're making the very noise that smartUSA should be listening to.

They say they want the roadster and a four door, give them what they want, you get sales.

So Penske has listened on one point (four door) but they're making an almost botched job by taking a Micra and slapping smart-like panels on it. Even the forfour has a lot more design to it than that as the only similarity between a Colt and a forfour is the mechanical parts.

And the partnership is listening with plans for a Twingo platformed forfour + fortwo and possibly a new roadster in the next couple years.

But one won't judge based on a sketch, one will wait...

Push to allow importation of special models (Tailor-Made, etc.).
Urge smartUSA to start doing some hardcore adverts.

There you go, no need to push for some Japanese hatch hecho en Mexico (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Seriously, why aren't you the president of Smart USA -- I'd vote for you!!

These are no-brainers really -- it's like watching a slow train wreck
