Power comes from a 22.6 kW-hr lithium-ion battery that runs down the middle of the car. It's good for 50 miles, but you don't have to worry about getting stranded as the battery winds down. An onboard generator driven by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine pulled from the General Motors parts
will keep the electric motors turning and recharge the battery, which also gets a boost from regenerative braking. Fisker calls the drivetrain "Q-Drive," and it's remarkably similar to the technology underpinning the Chevrolet Volt
All that technology and sexy packaging won't come cheap - the Karma will carry a base price of $87,000 when it goes into production at the end of next year. Despite the hefty price tag (and faltering economy), Fisker says he's sold out through mid-2010.
The only significant changes to the 408-horsepower super-luxe plug-in hybrid are a grille that's a little bigger at the corners, an air intake that's a little larger and an aerodynamic diffuser beneath the rear bumper. It's impressive to see the production car hew so closely to the prototype because too often something that wows the crowd at an auto show gets watered down as it moves from concept to reality.
