New Battery Technology

I was listening to Glenn Beck today and they talked about a company that filed a patent application for a solid state battery. They claim they are coming out with an EV that will have a range of 600 miles on a full charge and only take 1 minute to completely charge. I am not sure how these claims are going to panout, but if this battery technology comes out and we can get an upgrade like this in a Smart Car I'm going to love my car even more.

Even if the battery technology is feasible, there's no infrastructure to allow charging at that rate. You'd have to feed it current in the thousands to possible tens of thousands of amps, and that's a cable that's probably multiple inches in diameter. Not anything that could easily be handled by a normal user and definitely not anything that could be installed in a home.

Read the whole attached articles. It doesn’t surprise me that Beck didn’t bother checking sources.

Fisker (a crazy man who isn’t going to let Hurricane Sandy kill his dream) says, quote:

Quote:
“The Fisker EMotion has been proportioned to accommodate an advanced high-energy density, patent-pending battery pack and cooling system. It can be charged through the vehicle’s proprietary UltraCharger™ technology, charging over 100 miles in nine minutes.”
So not exactly 1 minute. But that charging rate is amazing!

They’re also no longer claiming a solid state battery, instead going for a more traditional battery with a 400+ mile range.

To be fair to Fisker, they originally went under because they chose pretty much the worst battery supplier possible. The batteries ended up being unreliable and quite fiery. Then the battery supplier folded and Hurricane Sandy decimated every car sitting at port.

They failed for no worse of a reason than smart did back in 2006. Hopefully this time around Fisker is successful, the world needs more interesting and innovative designs.

Just last night, Elon Musk announced the new Tesla Roadster. It supposedly will have a 600 mile range, will charge 400 of those miles in 30 minutes, and have a top speed that can give a Bugatti Veyron a run for its money. He debuted the Tesla truck last night too. That thing is supposed to have a 500 mile range (under full load) and a McLaren F1 seating position. And uh, a guaranteed 2019 release date.

I guess, maybe these guys know something we don’t about where battery tech is headed???

Tesla just announced its new Roadster
0-60 in 1.9 seconds 8.9 second quarter mile 250 mph top speed 621 mile range, with a 200 kw battery pack
Starting to open mega chargers. one in Baker just opened with 40 superchargers and a rest area in middle
New Semi Truck was announced as well up to 500 miles range fully loaded with a 80000 pound trailer
New Mega charger network to be deployed to allow a full charge in 30 minutes

Tesla keeps moving forward at a staggering pace.

The difference between them and the rest is they see the big picture.

Fisker might come back with new tech, but it keeps delaying its entire production line.

Amazing display by tesla last night, After they announce their new Semi, they role it back out and open the back and then pop out the new roadster with newer tech, insane speed and battery size and range.

You must see this car. amazing.

its great to see this industry continue to explode. Just came back to thread to see your post above me. must post and not leave computer to have breakfast. lol

Can you tell me more about the roadster? What's the battery capacity? Weight of the vehicle? Any handling or cornering performance estimates?

Elon didn't mention any of that. He just mentioned that the Roadster will be able to go over 600 miles on a charge and achieve top speeds of 250 mph with a price of about $200k. Sounds like he's trying to make a cheap hypercar.

There is news of new battery technology on the horizon all the time. Lithium-Sulphur, for example, has the potential to be far lighter than Lithium-Ion, and longer lived as well. However, Lithium-ion is ubiquitous today.

I wonder if someday Smart will offer a battery changeout to a new high capacity, long range batt?
