Need to replace the plastic rear cabrio window

My 2005 cabrio's window has finally gotten stage 4 plastic cancer and I must replace it. Getting the replacement back panel for the cabrio top (the plastic is not a separate part) requires my Canada connection getting it from Germany; the part alone will cost over $2,700—I didn't even ask about shipping the sucker from Germany to Toronto, and then to Los Angeles.

I've had many convertibles in my lifetime, most with plastic windows. Those windows could all be removed and replaced by a local convertible top and upholstery shop. I see no reason why that still can't be done, but I have yet to find a top and upholstery shop that says they can do it. I even tried a few marine upholstery places with no luck.

Any advice on, or experience with, replacing that sad plastic window?

I thank the Smart powers to be for changing that plastic concern to glass on my 2017 . It actually was the deciding factor on a Cabrio purchase . How does it stow when the top is down. My glass version folds forward in one piece and looks like it would be a replaceable item. It’s completely separate from the soft top canvas .

A good upholstery shop may be able to do it. You may be able to fix it yourself as well!

I would suggest you try and clean the plastic window first. Too bad you let it get to this stage, making a cleaning attempt more of a chore. I use a product called Speed Clean to clean the plastic windows & the rear window on my horseless carriages. You can contact Speed Clean at: SpeedClean Their phone # is 1(818) 618-3224. Their website is: They are located in Chatsworth.

Polish it regularly and that won't happen. This could be restorable with abrasive cleaners designed for plastic.

Failing that....Remove the rear part of the soft top and any shop can do it.

Give it a good hit with this first:
