Awd isn't usually needed in the city. I get around just fine with 2wd.

I've had both and my smart does fine. Tires and driver (not necessarily in that order) make as much difference as 2wd/4wd. Having the engine over the drive wheels is also a plus when you are in one of the lightest cars on the road - my original VW beetle only got stuck in the snow once, and that was when I hit the hard-packed snow at the end of the drive (thank you city snow plow) and it raised the wheels off the ground.

That said, I do like the stable feel of AWD. The ESP helps by quickly balancing drive when a wheel slips.

I think a Smart with AWD might make towing easier too. It would have all wheels pulling the load.

I love AWD, but, the smart is already running thin on power and driveline space. Adding AWD would require more room underneath to bring the drive to the front. Parasitic loss due to the extra drive train would slow it down, plus the extra weight. With the already limited market, I'd rather see the effort go to a diesel or turbo version. Rear wheel drive, rear engine is great in the snow, if I need more, I take a 4x4 truck or stay home (of course in the DC area some years we only get 1 or 2 sessions of snow).

The smart car is too tiny for AWD. It would also sap gas mileage and power from the tiny engine.

Perhaps a slightly larger Smart with room for AWD? Perhaps call it ForTow?
Perhaps it could be categorized as a micro suv?
