smart center Cincinnati closing

As predicted, the centers not currently associated with a Mercedes dealership are out in the cold. smart center Cincy worked very hard to become one of the best centers around, and nobody worked more to support smart than Charles Cokeley, the brand manager. You can read his post on usainsider here: WE WORK HARD TO END UP WITH NOTHING - smart USA insider

All of us in the region owe Charles and Nicole a lot for their hard work and support of not only the smart brand but each one of their customers. Hopefully we can come up with a way to thank them in the next few months.

"Myself and quite a few other dealers have worked countless hours to drive this brand in our own markets and spent many perosnal hours promoting this brand to make it a viable one just to get what I will call a "smack" in the face. We have taken criticism for years now and continued to hold strong to the brand name and promote it.

I would like to say that while I do believe in the smartcar, I feel that the two corporations involved here have played this like it is a game but it is not a game to those of us who will no longer have jobs, or will have to change career paths."

I can certainly understand this dealer's frustration... but I think it's a little early to start bashing the people at SmartUSA and ESPECIALLY Mercedes.

Mercedes will need good, LOYAL people who are willing to "hold strong to the brand name and promote it" through this transition period and beyond. Posts like this in a public forum may guarantee his need for a change in career paths.

Whatever. This is what happens when the big boys start making their business decisions - it affects people's livelihoods. There's not a more passionate smart supporter than the brand manager in Cincinnati and his reward for building the brand in this area over the past three years is a pink slip, simply because his center is associated with a Porsche dealership instead of Mercedes. I agree that smart USA is not the culprit in this corporate kabuki dance - but Roger Penske and M-B USA/Daimler certainly are. IMHO of course.

Unfortunately, if you're selling a car that you didn't manufacture, in a dealership that has a franchise name on the door, you get stuck with whatever the big boys decide they want to do with you.

Yes, it hurts the little guys... welcome to capitalism.

I hope you didn't take offense at my first reply... I certainly didn't intend to offend you. Yeah, it sucks when the big companies think more about $$$ than the lives of the people that depend on them.

I guess my point was that if you plan on working for "the Man", sometimes you gotta pucker up and kiss someeven when they are slapping you in the face. If Mercedes was considering offering him a position (and they are going to need smart specialists) do you think they would offer him anything now? It just seems to me that it's awfully early to start burning bridges. If he had secured a position with another company, by all means, let whatever you're feeling fly!

In this case, there's no connection with Mercedes whatever. Hopefully he'll be able to stay at the Porsche dealership in some capacity.

All the best to all those who will be in a bad job situation. Sadly I do not believe that all MB dealers will be selling or servicing our smarts. All any of us can do right now is wait and see what happens. Hopefully, the fun will continue
