There was a problem with the convenience group (auto headlights/wipers) that this was spontaneously draining the battery. smart issued a recall, but does not have a fix and told people not to use those options (turn off when vehicle is off) until they can come up with a fix.
Wipers work okay, but do not swipe across efficiently in light rain.

|SmartTech||the problem is with the auto head lamps. if its dark and you shine a flash light one them the turn off and then when its dark again the lights turn back on. problem is it only does it the first time you can keep shining the light and the head lamps wont turn off. we had 6 cars (customers + 5 new) and all did the exact same thing, nothing|

the sensors work fine on my car too. Nevernhad
A Problem. I doubt they will ever take those options out. Once they are put in to a production they stay for the life of the car makingwhy would they downgrade from auto lights/ rain sensors to manual?

|Brabus||I wonder if the Smart car that I'm taking these parts off of will need to have the alarm and fog lights deactivated.|

I admit, I'm one of those people who didn't read the manual.

It was pulled due to issues with the bridge for heated mirror functions, and causing excessive battery draw when people did not follow the manual and left the wipers and lights in auto all of the time on the '09s.
Also, IIRC, I read that it is coming back...
