As a followup to the "teaser" at OTD . . .

“Give Back Tour”
small car Enthusiast Cruise from Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa, FL
to Old 7-Mile Bridge in Knight’s Key, FL
during the 101st Year Celebration!

Share this with a Friend. Spread the word now on your social media channels! Anyone who owns a small car (smart, Mini Cooper, Fiat or iQ) is invited to join us on our Weekend Parade from Bridge to Bridge—or join us along the way—as we drive together into a magnificent sunset in the Keys for a worthy cause!

The Vision
Friday, January 25, 2013 our “Give Back Tour” will begin its rally in Tampa, FL to support one of the most recognizable and worth charities in the Florida Keys, “Friends of Old Seven,” a 501(c) 3 non-profit volunteer grass roots organization responsible for the ongoing maintenance and restoration of the Old Seven Mile Bridge.

Sunset on Saturday, January 26th, the caravan of smarts will conclude its rally at Knight’s Key, joining Friends of Old Seven during their 101 Year Celebration of the Old Seven Mile Bridge. Five Mercedes-Benz dealerships have agreed to participate and engage with the small car enthusiasts along the route: Tampa, Clearwater, Sarasota, Naples and Cutler Bay. Each participant, vendor and potential sponsor involved with our Tour will be encouraged to donate to Friends of Old Seven: https://friendsofoldseven.org/

This sounds like fun.

And it's on my birthday.

Has anyone contacted Amtrak about a discount for smarts on their Autotrain (DC - Orlando) both in general and specifically for this event?

AMTRAKs Auto Train service makes the 900 mile trip from Lorton, VA (Washington, DC) to Sanford, FL (Orlando) in about 17.5 hours.

The trip for a party of 2 will cost you $489 OW including meals and Reserved Coach seating. While there are three categories of vehicles, there is no smart sized category discount. Discounts are available only to large groups who pay as one group.

I called Amtrak and got the following info.

NO - smart sized option
NO - discounts for smart cars
NO - you can't take 2 smart cars for the price of a full size
NO - they don't do group discounts on the Auto Train (only on regular passenger trains)

So, it looks like I am going to be driving down for this event
(although now that it is open to mini, IQ, and others not sure if I want to associate with them?)

NEW stuff . . .

New promo video: Give Back Tour for Friends of the old Seven Promo on Vimeo

GBT website: Give Back Tour 2013

Additional "stuff":

The Give Back Tour, a charity drive, is now open to any small car... smart, Mini Cooper, Fiat and iQ.

Registration cost to defray event cost (includes event sticker) is $10 and payable by PayPal.

As the focus of this event is to preserve and "support" Old Seven, participants are being encouraged to donate 10 cents a mile for the 357 event or $36 (or for the "bean counters" out there - $35.70).

Friday night hotels will be the Fairfield Inn & Suites, Naples, FL (239) 530-3355 or Spring Hill Suites, Naples, FL (239) 352-2234. Group Rate Code for either hotel: Give Back Tour.

Saturday night hotels in Marathon, FL remain a work in progress.

Sounds like a fun event. Since I live in Fort Lauderdale, is it necessary to drive all the way to Tampa to turn around, drive past my house to head to the bridge, or can I just join up as the caravan makes it my way. Don't mean to sound lazy, just can't foresee myself driving 5 hours north to turn around and drive 7 hours back. LOL.

Event update . . .

The 101 Year Celebration fun begins Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay at 11 a.m. with food and entertainment. At 1 p.m. we depart for the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys. The caravan will be filmed from the air at sunset as we cross the bridge!

Tickets are $10 per person. OR, for only $20 more ($30 pp), you will have a spectacular dinner, outrageous entertainment and professional aerial photos of our event that'll last a lifetime!

A portion of all proceeds will be donated to www.friendsofoldseven.org, a 501(c) 3 non-profit grassroots organization responsible for the ongoing maintenance and restoration of the Old Seven Mile Bridge.

jwight, good catch!

Full Disclosure:

This event was first proposed at OTD 2012. Shortly thereafter, the event organizer requested that I make the orginal post.

Since October I have heard nothing from the event organizer and any updates (to include shortening the weekend event to one day) have been "heard on the street."

In one of my earlier posts I noted that - there apparently is a Face Book page that will provide a link to an event registration page? Please use that as your source for any additional information.

As the Original Poster, mods please remove this event from the Events National & Regional Forum page and CLOSE this thread.

Thanks, Tom
