Backround Info: Purchased this car 2 years ago with 60k on the odometer, it now has 112k. As far as I know the clutch itself has never been replaced. After a couple months of normal driving one day after a nice highway cruise, the car would not go into gear and got the three lines on the dash. I disconnected the battery for a minute or so, reconnected it, and turned the key on. It made a bunch of clicking noises in the transmission for about 5-7 seconds....and boom it worked again. This happened a few more times over the course of two years and was quickly resolved by doing this method. It was a little inconvenient, but it worked. (I think that gear sound is what everyone calls 'teaching", so it can figure out what gear it is really in.)
This week I was driving and I was stopping at a light this same situation happened again, however the trick did not work. It made the same clicking and adjusting noises that it had done in the past, but now instead of three lines, I get P in park, sometimes N and sometimes blank for reverse, N for neutral, sometimes N and sometimes blank for drive and the "manual shift" area. The car will not start unless I disconnect the battery and reconnect it, but it still wont go in gear.
I read up on the clutch actuator possibly needing adjustment, so I decided to give a whirl at sliding it over a notch and noticed that as soon as I started to get all three bolts loose, the piston forcefully and quickly shot the entire unit all the way out towards the driver side, no chance of pushing it back in by hand..the force was just too strong. So I unbolted it cleaned up the connections....opened the actuator, cleaned and re-lubed everything, it all went back together great. I bolt it back up with the piston retracted, did a reteach and still having the same issue... :cussing: what else could be causing this to happen?!
