so, AFAIK, I've read all the posts about the fuel pump possibilities, which I DIY replaced with a brand new Delphi (she had just filled the tank the day before the issue presented) and I've read the posts about the CPS (crank position sensor) which I swapped this morning with a known good one from my 2014. still no start, just a slow(er) crank until the ignition cuts itself off, just as it's been doing all along.

we bought it brand new from the Seattle smart center almost exactly ten years ago.
battery has 12.39VDC.
currently no OBD II codes.
139k+ miles.
the only time it's ever been in the shop was last year to recharge the A/C & do the 100k recommended maint.
I've done religious oil/filter and air filter changes (DIY).
it's always had Premium, 92 octane.

any thoughts?

what's the best or easiest way to check for spark on these? I've poked around a little from the top & bottom (bellypan is still removed from fuel tank drop) but honestly I'm not sure where the coil pack is located.

I feel I'm a fairly competent mechanic (doesn't everyone think that) as I rebuild & mod antique GoldWings, but these are a bit of a different breed & until now I've never really needed to dig into it to do anything other than swap rims & tires and the simple maint.

all assistance appreciated!

check battery voltage when it is cranking. 12.39 sounds a bit low. A fully charges battery should be up over 13 volts , my guess is you lost some capacity in the battery and if it drops below 11 volts, you need a new one. Also when running, voltage should be around 14 volts

A low battery will cause all sorts of problems as everything is electrical on these cars

Fully charged automotive batteries should measure at 12.6 volts or above. When the engine is running, this measurement should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts. If you don't have a multimeter to tell you the voltage of your battery, you can do a test of your electrical system by starting the car and turning on the headlights.

got a meter, just can't test the charging voltage. ?

check voltage at battery while the motor is running. That should give you a general idea of the charging voltage.checking with the headlights off, then on should show about the same voltage. if it gets lower with the headlights on, suspect the battery or the alternator.

Changing the battery is much easier than the alternator so try that first. If a battery is more than 3 years old, replace it. I have seen brand new batteries fail too.

I have two other late model vehicles, that had bad batteries. Both of them, less then 2 years old. Bad battery cells. You weren’t able to start them. The dash board lights flickered like Christmas lamps. Couldn’t lock the doors, The gear shifter, inhibitors locked up. Couldn’t pull the shifter, out of park. I don’t think the smart car system, is as sophisticated as both those vehicles. Modern cars need a fully charged good battery to run them.

My wife left our smart cars head lamps on. Didn’t have auto shut off, like the rest of our cars. Dead as a door nail. I Was able to jump start it. Drove it for 30 minutes, it was fine again. The original smart car battery lasted 6 years.

Might want to just replace your battery. Give that a try first. I keep one of these jump start devices in all our vehicle now. Tried of getting stranded somewhere.

brand new battery, charged overnight on the Deltran 'smart' charger, & installed. all battery terminals clean & tight.
still same result.
rolls over, won't fire & run.

I will go check for spark later today.

Have you looked at the crankshaft position sensor? <img src="http://smartcarofamerica.com/forums/images/SmartCarOfAmerica/smilies/tango_face_smile.png" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" class="inlineimg" />

yep, as mentioned in the OP, I also have a running/drivable 2014 that I pulled the CPS from & swapped into the '09.
the 2014 CPS works fine in the '09 and the '09 CPS works tine in the 2014.

so, after all that, a local MB repair shop also advertises as a smart car repair... and they have a STARR computer.
we had it towed in & within a couple of hours he called.
evidently they had to put it in "lean" mode to get it to start, then they found a spark plug only finger tight (he didn't specify which one in the shop notes), which I NEVER would have expected as I've never touched the plugs. hence why I didn't dig into it in that direction. and the plug(s) "were worn". which I suppose makes sense @ 140k miles.
and it was also wet. which, since it wouldn't fire, yeah. uncombusted fuel.
they replaced the plugs, said they couldn't get Iridiums, only Platinum... whatev, & it seems fine now.

big UPs to all who contributed info! always appreciated!
