I have a smart car which starts, runs, and shifts but will not auto shift does the odd time but usually have to manual shift about 95% of the time doesnt have the button on the side of the shifter just looking to see if this has happened to anyone before or anyone knows what can be done

Have yoiu checked in with the Canadian forum, ClubSmartCar? They have a lot of experience with the 05/06 diesels.

I believe this is by design. Per Evilution, 450 transmission drive units came in three variants: Softip, Softouch, and Softouch with start button.

If you don't have a button on the side of your gear knob I would be inclined to think you have a Softip drive unit. This means the only shifting the car will do itself in normal driving is downshifting.
