2011 A/C Fan Problem

1241 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Apatz
I’ve read all the threads and pulled the fan motor but still having problems. When I first start the car everything works fine. However, after a few minutes the fan speed starts dropping until there’s barely any air movement. When I turn the fan switch all the way off shouldn’t the red a/c light go off? It doesn’t. I don’t want to start throwing parts at the problem as none of them are cheap. Anybody else had this problem? What was the fix? Please and thanks!

Blower Motor:

Have you cleaned the commutator, replaced the brushes, & lubed the shaft bushings? There are also aftermarket replacement motors out there as well. Might be a better way for you to go.
I'm having a similar, but possibly entirely different, problem. In my 2008 sometimes the blower won't start when the car does. It just doesn't blow at all and has the same thing with the AC light staying on with the fan turned all the way off, which I have heard is a symptom of a problem with the blower motor. It will just randomly start blowing as I drive, sometimes a minute later and sometimes ten minutes later. I have noticed the power of the fan going up and down a little, but it never stops all the way after it starts. Fortunately for me it looks like this is still covered under the used car warranty from the non-Smart dealer I purchased it from. I'm dropping it off there tomorrow morning, I'll follow up if they manage to fix it and let you know what they did.
It's not fixed yet, but the tech said "blower resistor signs of over heat internal on head unit" on the work order. So they're ordering a new blower resistor.
Gave up on fan and ordered a used assembly off of eBay for $99. Installed in 2 minutes. Working perfectly and may rebuild old fan as a spare by ordering new brushes and polishing commutator. Very happy with my purchase.

I'm glad glad you got the air blowing again, too hot here to drive without A/C.

Thanks. It’s truly been a miserable week without the a/c. Glad it was a relatively simple fix.
