2012 Passion: first impressions

I think they've done really well this year.

Traded in my 2009 to get the better interest rate (0%!), as well as the greatly improved warranty, the eight airbags, the improved transmission, and the factory cruise control. New toy is silver on silver.

I had an MDC cruise control that was giving me occasional trouble (no fault of the mechanism or Smart Madness, who replaced the original unit quickly and with no argument... it just didn't agree with the car for some reason. Would trip the solid yellow triangle every couple of weeks). The factory cruise control is excellent. Holds speed very well, and doesn't over-rev like aftermarket (set it for 65, and when you go up a hill, the aftermarket screams up a little over 70 then settles down). The factory one just calmly brings you back up to speed and stabilizes. It takes a bit firmer tap on the brakes to disengage, but there's a "cancel" button on the left side of the wheel that does the same thing, then returns you to your set speed when you hit resume. Very good overall. If you love the paddles, you don't want the cruise control because it replaces them, but I rarely used them. And you can still use the gearshift to shift manually if you flip it towards you, just like before.

Transmission is MUCH improved. Very well behaved in the parking lot, no more jerking. Smooth shifts all around, very happy with it.

I got the hockey puck (light/rain sensor) this time around. VERY impressed. Left work yesterday in a light mist... turned the lights to auto and the wipers to intermittent. Leaving the parking lot, the LED lights were on, and the wipers swiped maybe once every 30 seconds or so. Pulled out onto the 45mph street, and the wipers sped up a little... ok, that's the same as before, speed controlled... or so I thought.

A sheet of rain swept across the road... and before I had a chance to bump the wipers to constant on, they sped up themselves, then as soon as I made it through the brief rain squall, they slowed right back down where they needed to be. Cool.... then a couple miles later, a large truck pulled out in front of me. As soon as the spray from his back end started hitting, the wipers sped up again and slowed after he turned off. About this time, the clouds thickened, and on came the low beams. Few miles farther, the rain paused... back to the LED lights, and very very slow wipers, just enough to remind me to turn them off. Overall I give the hockey puck five stars! I expected it to perform well in rain, but mist usually throws off "automatic" sensors... not in this case!!

Very very happy with the Silver Surfer! Now to get the vortex generators back on, and make another "CAPACITY: 19 CLOWNS" sticker for the rear window...

Good review. Almost makes me want to get one. :)
Ditto. Would love a smoother transmission but not enough to sell the old girl
That 0% interest rate made it very easy for me to trade up. Not to mention the $1000 owner loyalty allowance... and with the addition of the side airbag and the daytime running lights (the new LED bars), my insurance dropped something like 60 bucks a year.
There is actually no need to turn the wipers off, they will only come on when they "feel" moisture.

So you are saying the smart has an automated manual wiper switch, not a true manual switch?

on my car, if you push it all the way down, the wipers don't do anything until there is moisture on the windshield.

*you do need to have the light/rain sensor.
:whipping: :bangwall: oh boy....

Redoregon - you sure you are getting some swag for pushing '12's? :D. You're doing a great job talking it up. I would not get any trade in since my car is beat plus it's just about paid off. You're making great points to consider an upgrade.
Really , take time to drive the '12 . The tranny in much better . I noticed it right off .
Kermit, you might be surprised. And I'm pretty sure you'd at least get the grand for owner loyalty... what would it hurt to swing by and ask (assuming you're not one of those guys whose dealer is two hours away)...

Nah, my dealer isn't two hours away. It's 3. :p I'd love to swing by but most likely won't happen. :(

I have waaayyyy too much stuff on my car to get rid of it. I'll do what everyone else does, use it up then park it in a field (in my case the garage). I recently retired so every penny counts, I get something, I have to get rid of something.

Since RO is from TX he can appreciate this. Back in 2000 I lived in Abilene. Someone local won $1M in the Publisher's Clearinghouse sweepstakes. It was live on TV when they went to their trailer and they were asked what they were going to do with the $$$. They said, "we're goin' to Wal-Mart!".

FWIW, my above ground pool outside my trailer is aluminum. No cars in my field. :p

We traded our 08 in Jan for a 12. They are the same cars but with many improvements as stated, and yes I like using their money to have a new car with warranty. Though probably will not need it anymore than we did on the 08.

Best. Comment. Ever.
> the improved transmission

The only difference between the 2008 transmission and the 2012 is a firmware flash that was given out for free in 2009.

You can get it for free for any current smart car at the dealer.

Just leased a 2012 two months ago. I really like it. If I knew then what I know now, I would have purchased the Smart instead of leasing.

I only hope the don't mess up the design. I will purchase a 2015 Smart.
I'm still loving my 2012. Third tank averaged 40.6 MPG!!!

Tucker's party trick is staying clean forever and getting a full tank on less than $40.

That, and since I'm pretty much the only facelifted smart in my area, everyone knows where I am at all times!

Someone offered me $20 to let him test drive it :D
I bought my 2012 the first week of Feb. I got the $1000 loyalty and the 0% interest loan. I was happy.

I call it Zippy.

Wow, a smoother transmission, $1.000 loyalty and 8 airbags... sounds wonderful, but I am loyal to the one I waited for so long, it hasn't done me wrong and it is going to be paid off soon.
